Re: OMC 400/800 Sterndrive Tilt
I had multiple problems that I'm still working through. I had solenoid problems and found a low cost source for a tilt motor, so I KNOW that I'm AWESOME up to the hammer coupling, which I inspected and it looks great. That stern drive will drop with a tap of the switch. It will come up about two inches and quit on the up, though.
So my problem is now the worm gear, the clutch pack or somewhere in between. My plan is:
1) Get the cover off the clutch pack and inspect. In the spring, I changed the "oil" in the clutch and it came out a gooey, watery mess. So much water that it came out clear and chunks of "oil" came out. I refilled with SAE30 and prayed. Guess that I need to take that cover off and hit with a heavy duty de-greaser to get the chunks out and clean up the clutch.
2) Once clean, try to run the tilt up.
3) If it goes up, get the trailer tongue up high (it already is, I store it that way), and get a jack under the stern drive (anyone got a safe suggestion on how to do this?) I was thinking a 2x10 under the drive, with a jackstand/bottle jack/jackstand under the 2x10. That way if there's a problem with the bottle jack, I don't loose a hand or damage the drive. Disassemble everything, replace ALL the seals with Sierra 18-8360 CLUTCH HOUSING SEAL KIT. Anyone have a replacement for the OMC seal installer part # 910585, or have a trick to install the clutch shaft seals?
4) Refill this thing with grease as mentioned above, or SAE30
If I wanted to replace the clutch pack, where can I find one? I'm guessing it's gotta be $250-300+
