Re: OMC 460 7.5L needs timing info
Timing will make a pretty big difference in how the 460 runs.
Time it at 10 degrees for regular gas and 15 degrees BTDC for higher octane fuel....According to my 1987 OMC service manual...(Bobhill...I think you might have had it reversed)
I set mine at 14 degrees and have been running it on ARCO regular with no preignition (PING) .... I was told by a racing engine builder to advance it until it pings and back it off 2 degrees at a time until it doesn't ping. If you get it advanced too far the atarter may not want to turn it over! (If you're using an advance timing light make sure you read the directions on how to set it!)
You can measure the dwell using a dwell meter OR you can just set the points at 0.017 using a feeler gage. both do essentially the same thing.
(This isn't a chevy, you can't open the door and set the dwell with the engine running darn it!!!)
I had to scrape the OMC gray paint and sand the balancer a little with emory cloth to see the timing marks.
If you don't get it timed with enough advance it will not make full rpm.
Also, if it seems to lose power at lower RPMS you might want to take a look at the distributor. someone may have played with the centrifugal advance weights/springs.
What pitch prop do you have on it and what RPM do you get at WOT?
(that's a big heavy boat)
I have a 14.5-19p repitched to 20. 3 blade SS.
I'm getting about 50mph at 4200rpm.

I recently picked up 1988 Four Winns 245 Vista. I love it but when I am trying to plane off I have to go Wide open to plane and once I back off to 3500 RPMs it seems to lose power. I replaced plugs, rotor, cap, condenser, points. I set the points to .017 and am having a hard time trying to find out the correct dwell angle. In the Seloc book it stated 24-30. In the OMC operator manual it is 32 + or - 2. I also need to time the engine. I can not find the ruler that is usually found on cars or other engines. Any ideas?? Thanks!
