Starting fluid is NOT fine on a gas engine. It can bend rods just like water. It's not good on any engine.
If you need that stuff to start your engine, you need repairs to your engine, not a spray to possibly make it worse.

Been a tech for 20 yrs never had a problem. Am a master Volvo tech and ASE and Dodge/Chrysler/Jeep/Cummins master tech. Work in a Dodge/Mazda/VW shop currently and the only gas engine we won't use ether on is the Rotaries. Never broke one or blew one up-just gotta watch the backfire if the timing's off, you can lose your eyebrows. We use it to start 'em for diag purposes. I can appreciate it if you're scared of it, but you shouldn't base your advice on your own insecurities and inexperience.

If I can't get them started without out it, then I find out WHY, No reason to get em started with ether, doesn't tell me a thing about why it won't start if the thing is running.

The worst part is those that DON'T know how to use it. If a little works, use a lot that's gotta work better.......... right??????? Boommmmmm

Starting fluid should never be used. It is way too volatile and can ignite way too early while the piston is coming up damaging the engine.

Replace the starter even if it isn't the culprit. That starter will leave you stranded some day and it will cost you more than the just the price of the starter in a ruined day, vacation and/or tow.

If you worked flat rate and you needed to know if a no-start was caused by fuel issue-a little starting fluid verifies or eliminates very quickly. Ether is nowhere near as volatile as nitrous oxide and we run that in stock motors, too. We also use ether to clear a flooded engine. As I said before in other posts-everybody has their own way of doing things and diagnosing, but what you are telling people about starting fluid is just wrong. It can't fire in a cold gas engine until the spark ignites it-period. It can fire prematurely in a diesel engine, though, which is why we don't use it in those.
