I'm following the book removing my '79 OMC 800 shift cable to get the outdrive off.

I detached it from the shift unit on the intermediate, I removed the retaining nut on the wet side of the transom, but it was stuck in the brass tube on the shift unit so I broke off about an inch of insulation rubber on it.

Now I can't get it out the transom it's stuck there.

Any hints/tips/tricks?

Is my cable trashed because the insulation is an inch shorter?

Should I give it all I've got for a tug of war until something breaks free (or something just breaks)?

Is this an electric shift? Are you talking about the electrical cable going thru the intermediate housing?

No, it's a 1979 OMC 800 Stringer Hydro/mechanical shift. Yes, I'm talking about the mechanical shift cable going through the intrmediate housing.

Shoot some PB Blaster up there. Try to get it on both sides of the transom. Let it set for about 1/2 hour. Repeat two or three times. Get an extra set of hands to help you. One pull, one push. Good luck!

Don't break that cable - you'll not easily find another one.

Does it matter that I lost an inch of insulation?

Does it matter that I lost an inch of insulation at the shift box end? A friend said "Since you lost the rubber, you'll never get the right tension to shift, just cut it and drill it out"

Is there any hope to get it shifting again if that inch of rubber is broken off the end?

If the cable is no good I might as well cut it out and start looking for another one.

I can't quite picture what happened there. is the cable now out, but some of the rubber is still stuck?
