all stringers have tilt..... only some had trim.

which motor are you talking about?

the electric motor for the worm drive tilt, or the electric motor on the hydraulic trim

pull it out to bench test

you may have to replace it, they go bad. moisture wicks past the seal and gums up the armatures.

could also be the tilt clutches or worm gears are stuck

Scott's right - those motors are notoriously finicky. Pull it and test.

You can also grease the trunions; and make sure the drive didn't jam down too hard and get stuck (happens occasionally) by removing the quadrant gear, lifting the drive and re-attaching the drive. Also, check to make sure the battery has a pretty full charge. - - But it's likely that motor.

Welcome aboard.

thanks for replies. is it a very hard process to remove motor? the worm gear part looks good. I hope I don't have to take it in for repairs.

Just 2 bolts and disconnect the wires. A 1/2” universal socket with an extension usually gets the bolts out. There is a plastic thrust washer that is on both sides of the hammer blow coupling to keep it centered. The coupling is held together with a spring, sometimes the coupling will come apart if the shafts are slightly distorted, the spring is easy to rewind to reassemble the coupling.
If you removed the shaft and worm gear be sure to put the thin plastic washer in front of the worm, the worm and shaft have to be installed before reinstalling the tilt motor.

Thanks Kenny, I will take a look tomorrow, raining here now. I have a service manual, so that should help.

I had a chance to get motor removed, it is all rusty inside and had been sealed on both ends with red sealant by previous owner. is there any special trick to installing the new motor? I found new 1 for about $150

we got the motor installed, it worked and we connected the worm to the shaft. now the motor spins but no movement. the hammer blow coupling is what we're looking at now. also it is 1978 model year and unsure if we need gasket on the tilt motor since sources list for 1967-1976, and 1980-1985 only.

Thanks Scott. according to the diagrams it looks like the tilt motor itself is like the earlier types, my dad's helping me and he doesnt think there should be any gasket at all. i just dont want the motor to get wet and ruined like the old one. the guy we bought motor from said to silicone the heck out of it.

I would not sillycone it in. If it needs to come out you will play he'll getting it out if it's cured. And going in will be messy. Not sure about your unit but my 74 type doesn't even have screws holding it together. Just the 2 that mount it. If it's glued in and you need to pull it chances are you would pull the motor to pieces and still have the one end stuck

Thanks for the info, yes mine is the same type where the 2 bolts that hold motor together also mount it. i'm still not sure about gasket or plastic washer tho...

Mine does have a gasket ....fyi....
I would think they all would. And if it's designed for one, and said gasket isn't used there might be the possibility of the motor being to close to the coupling causing issue.... maybe not

Mine never had a gasket. The idea of keeping water out of it sounds great, but your most likely entry is to the part that is sticking out into the bilge ... A gasket in there isn't going to hurt; may help a little. Just make sure you've got good connection to that worm gear shaft.
