OMC Cobra Exhaust Bellows Problem

Hello,

I just bought a 1986 Glastron X-19. (today) It has a V-6 and the OMC cobra out drive.

its a bit rough around the edges, but I think for a bit of work and the price i paid its a great boat. (like many around here I have the fix-it sickness :D )

after doing a through check on the boat I noticed that my exhaust bellows is ripped in two places.

My questions are this:

How does that effect the boats function? ( I know it needs to be replaced)

Can I still use the boat? I would like to take it out and do a through sea trial to examine other areas of the boat.

With this ripped will I take on water?

I found this kit to repair the problem, and get a few other things done at the same time too:

Thanks for your help! I love the vast amount of information on this forum!

You won't sink. That's a good price for all that. You might not need it all.Your gimbal might not be bad.
Cobras are easy to remove and replace. You will need an alignment tool if you change the gimbal bearing.J

Re: OMC Cobra Exhaust Bellows Problem

Thanks for the info guys!

I will be pulling the out drive off after this weekend and ordering a kit similar to that. is there a rubber area that surrounds the out drive where it goes through the transom?

Its a great boat and I got a steal on it, so I really don't mind doing a bit of work. Plus replacing the U joint bellows would not be a bad idea, for a bit of peace of mind either. doing all of the bellows, gimbal and the u joints wouldn't be a bad idea either I don't think, especially while I have it put up for the winter. I want to pull the out drive off and replace all of the easier serviced parts.

where can I get and alignment tool? or is it easy to make one?

the exhaust does have a few large rips in it, that's definitely not factory!

Thanks Guys!!

You might want to check e-bay for a tool to pressure check your drive. I think the one I got was about $20 or $30 bucks. You could do a search on this forum as some members have posted "how to's" to build your own.
I like to pressure test any time I service the drive to make sure the seals are doing their thing. Welcome to iboats and good luck on your project.

Howdy,

Your exhaust bellows is not critical at all....and new ones actually have slits in them so they drain well....

My King Cobra ran for about 15 years with NO exhaust bellows at all.

You should however check your drive shaft bellows carefully. If it's questionable, it will need to be replaced.

You can easily make your own alignment tool out of 1.375" steel rod if you have access to a lathe. The dimensions have been posted here many times. Just do a search.

Thanks I will do a search. I do have access to a CNC lathe, that would probably work pretty great!

I will check the drive bellows over really well.
