Re: OMC Cobra UpperGearcase Lubricant?
On the Cobra there is a drain hole (at the bottom), a fill port, (about half-way up the drive) and the dipstick at the top. (which you're going to replace?)
The "little" Cobras hold around 60-64 oz of liquid. (the "King" Cobra behind the 460 holds 108oz)
You fill the drive from the fill port until the dipstick indicates full, RESTING on the hole it screws into.....(from the manual) "allowing for a slight over-fill" ....
Then you run the drive and do subsequent checks with the dipstick screwed all the way in.
Several years ago my brother took his (now mine) Four Winns Liberator to a Four Winns dealer in the SF Bay Area of Ca. They "serviced" the drive (460 King Cobra). They filled it like a Mercruiser, (from the bottom)
That summer he took it to the lake and during a high speed WOT run around the lake, the drive seized.
The dealer replaced the drive with NO "Lawyering-up" .......seemed they had it happen more than once.
Your drive has shims that set the preload on the bearings. I sold mine recently along with the service manual so I can't refer to it to see what tools are required to do the job. but you can go HERE and see what's inside and order all the parts needed.
Put that thing back together with the wrong preload on the bearings or gears and it will self destruct in the future.
Also, if there was ANY METAL in the oil anywhere that contamination went all thru the drive.....not good in anyone's book.
Your mileage may vary.....
Cheers,
Rick
Just from your description it appears that you may not be reading the OEM OMC Cobra service manual?was told I only need to pump in about a quart to the lower air breather hole.
