There's 6 steel nuts on the drive to remove and the long SS rod thru the back holding the trim cyls on.

remove them and it should slide right off. If it doesn't come off, the yoke may be stuck in the coupler (because it hasn't been removed in a long time) It will be very hard to pull off.

(I hope you didn't pay a lot for this boat......)

Were you able to move it at all?

Re: omc cobra

The only thing holding the yoke in there then is probably the gimbal bearing. There's probably some corrosion on the yoke shaft and it getting caught on the bearing.

If you got it out an inch or so you should be able to see the U-joints.

Are they all rusty?

You're probably going to need to replace them, the gimbal bearing, bellows, shift cable, bellows, etc...

Try to squirt some PB Blaster inside there & let is soak for awhile. Like HT said, plan on replacing u-joints, etc. If u buy the parts on ebay, you're looking at approx. $150.00., or iboats will have what you need. You need an OMC shop manuel if u plan on doing the work yourself.

Transom service kit is about 125 at ebasicpower.
That includes the gasket,seals,o-rings,bellows and gimbal bearing.
The u-joints and shift cable will run another 150 to 200....
Might as well do it all while its apart...

The OEM service manual is a MUST have for this job....the shift cable adjustment must be done to exact specs in the manual.
This is the real manual,The Seloc or Clymers books are useless..

Also the drive should be in forward gear when pulling it..turn the prop to make sure the clutch dogs are in gear.

Well, there's 2 ways. You can remove the shift cable at the engine, & pull on the cable to get it back into neutral. Or, remove the front anode & raise the shift rod.

Never mind the anode. Try to shift it at the engine.

It really doesn't matter what gear it's in to remove it. (It's a Cobra) It just has to be in the same position when it goes back on.

The only way that is going to work is if you are going to be able to get it on the shaft as it goes through the gimbal bearing.

My suggestion is push it back in the inch and then pull it out again. If you work it back and forth, it will come out. Getting it out an inch is a very good sign you will be able to get it out.

Another trick is to attach the trim cylinders back up and stand on the drive while some one hits the up button on the trim.

You know, you're right. I've always pulled mine while it was in neutral. Now I feel bad for giving the guy bad advice.
