To those who had a slipping problem with your 1977 and older, electric shift OMC drive:

If your dealer can't get them(or can't find them)The spacers are available.

I just don't remember who all needed them...

Rabidfish:
Thanks for you help, do I need two: one forward and one rev.
Drop the lower unit or possible do everything from propeller shaft, I just did all the seals two years ago, from the manual look like I might have to remove the vertical drive shaft in order get to all the gear, spring coil etc. I still not sure exactly where this spacers go
Do I go to you Web or call you to order these
3-15-05

Re: OMC electric shift slipping

Rabidfish -

I am a brand new member...out of necessity! My wife talked me into buying an older 24' searay last year. Tested the motor out of water - it ran, and the prop spun slightly at idle. So I figure it will work. Well I spent the better part of the summer refurbing the old girl - she's pretty now. Put her in the water - turned her over...but the screw wasn't spinning. It's a TRII w/electric shift. You seem to be very knowledgable about this type of transmission - can one replace electric shift with cable? I would appreciate any guidance you can give me. The Mercruiser manual I have doesn't address the electric shift. This is my first I/O - I'm really wet behind the ears, but I like to try doing this things on my own first...esp when marinas are charging $100 an hour!

- Respectfully, RattPatrol

Is the drive white or black? I thought only OMC had an electric shift.

Re: OMC electric shift slipping

Those TR II drives go back a lot of years, and it has been so long since I've worked on them. I doubt you will find many mechanics who have heard of them, much less worked with them. They used an electric motor to actuate the shift lever on a propriatary MercTrans transmission. Try to find an old established MercCruiser dealer who may have the books on it.

They were not very common, even back then, so I doubt there is a stash of parts or used units anywhere. Perhaps Don S, a Merc sterndrive guru, would have some insight to help you out.

See if you can find the factory service manuals, perhaps on Ebay, which is also a good supply of parts for obsolete units.

I wish you luck with your project.

Re: OMC electric shift slipping

Sorry for the delay, Just had to go fishing before the boating season gets started.

In any case. From what I remember, those were simply (Borg Warner) Velvet Drives, with an electric shift mechanism... You can certainly convert a Velvet Drive to mechanical(cable) shift.

If it isnt an electrical problem, and the shift lever is working, then you have a hydraulic/friction plate problem.

Does it slip in both gears?
if so, probably either the oil. the pump, or the valve. To know what is wrong you'll need a pressure gauge. (0-200psi) The pump should be capable of 150psi or so.

If just in one direction, then you probably have a clutch plate problem.

There are good used and remanufactured transmisions all over the internet.

Hope this helps, Good luck !

Thanks for the input fellas - I will do some looking around on the net for manuals...then hopefully get a free weekend to get on it. You'll probably see a post from me again - I appreciate any comments.

Re: OMC electric shift slipping

i am curious how to convert to a manual shift - it seems like that would be the easiest fix. We've finally got some weather that I can get out to start working on this tranny problem.
