Hello
I have an 1987 OMC 5.7. I am building a new engine and have already pulled the old one as well as the stern drive. With the stern drive out, I have replaced the bellows, greased the u joints, changed the oil as well as the water pump, and removed the remains of the flappers. The zincs are almost new and I have not had any shift problems or performance problems of any kind. Does anyone have any suggestions of anything else I should do or inspect while I have it off ? Once I get things back together, I can try out the Delco EST ignition conversion. Thanks.

It would be a pretty good idea to look over the transom and bilge area closely for water intrusion.

When I pulled my 460 King Cobra, there was a lot of water in the lower part of the transom. Seems Four Winns did a pretty poor job of sealing the transom where the drain was. I ended up removing the drain and had to fill the area below the transom wood. There was a pretty big gap between the bottom of the transom (wood) and the fiberglass bottom of the boat.......around 1/4" ...... After I dried it all out I filled the whole area with marine epoxy mixed with powdered fiberglass.

After it all cured I re-drilled the hole and installed a new drain.

Also, if you haven't done it you should carefully check your side engine mounts (wood below) for rot.

If you haven't already replaced the lower shift cable, do it now. Looking at the gimble assy from the rear if you look underneath on the starboard side at full tilt, you can see the end of the cable sheath, this is where on mine the sheath itself was almost broken, looked like the plastic casing rubbed through and let water get in and rotted the spiral wound metal inner, cable itself was fine. I was very lucky to have caught it in time.

Exactly....Change the lower cable and boot and it will save you headaches in the future....;)
