Originally posted by tysidor:
Well I finally had time to check the timing. I tested it at WOT in the water. It looks to be very close to 28. Sometimes the light would blink slightly lower and sometimes slightly higher.
I have a thread going about my 90 and it seems to have the same problem as your motor. My light blinked like that when I had a timing light hooked up before. Shouldn't it blink at a constant rate when the throttle stays the same. Good it be a problem with electronics?

Basscat 1 -- All butterflies on carbs are wide open -- Timing linkage is hitting rubber stopper -- Timing set and verified at WOT on trailer in water -- Double checked all of my new fuel system, nothing is leaking, all fittings are tight, no kinks or bends to worry about

As far as my timing light blinking slightly off. I really don't know if this should be a concern or not. Maybe someone else can verify. It would sometime blink between 26-30. Never lower then 26 and never higher then 30. I figured it was pretty close.

Have you checked timing on #1 and #2?
Does your flywheel have markings for #1 and #2?
If it has markings for both, you need to check both positions and use the one showing the most advanced timing.

When this happens, does the engine rpm's fluctuate?

Walleyehed -- Yes, I checked timing on 1 and 2. They both looked about the same.

BassCat -- If the rpms fluctuate it isn't noticable by ear or by the tach. So in other words if it does it would be very little.

You might check the flywheel key and make sure its good and tight and not worn.

Have you tried running the boat at WOT with the engine cover off?

Again, just turning over some stones.

Will it turn over 5k without a load?

I hope you mean "will it turn over 5K without a load of people".....
vranasaurus, that's a good way to blow an engine to hell and back....NEVER run an outboard such as this over 2000RPM, no-load, NEVER!

tysidor, I would strongly recommend at this point, that you take it to a dealer, let them put the test-wheel on and make sure it's developing the rated power.
We really have no consistant data to go by and we're shooting in the dark....we need a constant value here.

BassCat -- I have not checked the flywheel key. I can double check that to be sure. Yes, I have tried running at WOT with the engine cover off. It makes no difference.

As far as running it at WOT without a load the closest to that I have come is when I backed it into the water on the trailer to set the timing. I backed it in just far enough so the AV plate was covered with water. With this amount of load it was turning 5800-5900. When I pumped the primer bulb it would jump upto 6200-6300. I forgot to mention this earlier sorry guys. So yes, it will rev there and it sounds very good there.

Walleyehed -- Maybe your right. This just may be over my head. I am sure some of you guys could troubleshoot it and figure it out right away. I just thought that maybe with some help I could get it fixed up. At this point I almost hate to spend any more money on it.

What will it mean if it is or isn't reaching it's rated power? How will this help troubleshoot it?

When you said, "With this amount of load it was turning 5800-5900" I assume you had the boat in gear? No offense, just checking.

What about high altitude jets? I dont know what the altitude is in Montana, but may you need to check that too.

New here but thought this thread seemed interesting.

You say you are at 3,500 feet ASL. I'd think you'd have to rejet your carbs to get proper air/fuel mixture. Does the carbs have high speed adjustment screws on that year or are they fixed jets like the newer models? You would want to take it to a good two stroke mechanic to have it done. run too lean and goodbye cylinders

Where did you buy the rig from? Was it used at that elevation prior to you buying it?

we got some good wrenches here with high altitude set-ups, and yes, that can make a difference but I,m running sea-level jets in my V6 at almost 4000ft...when I get a bit more time on it, it will be leaned down 2 steps.
You can run about 1 deg farther advanced for every 2000ft. as well. I just don't think that's killing the power THAT much...

BassCat -- Yes, it was in gear. I was setting my timing at WOT this way.

Altitude is about 3300 Feet.

As far as the high altitude jet go. I have talked to every big marina in Montana and none of them change out the jets. They told me the differences are very little.

My jets in my engine are also fixed jets, so I can't adjust them that way. The engine was bought from the local marina and has always operated at this altitude.

Thanks again for all the replys and help.

The marina is wrong....it does make a heck of a difference, it's just most don't want the liability of a melt-down.
We need to pull a main jet out, see what it is compared to what the sea-level jet is and go from there. It would be like a 62C or something along those lines...

Hmmmmmm, I wonder if that's why my 150 is such a dog at WOT. . . .

Different size jets will make a difference. I would check them.

What should be my next step? Should I take it to a dealer, or check the flywheel and the jet sizes?

The other big problem is that I really don't trust the local marina's.

Any idea's why it was loading up and dieing the other day?

Re: OMC Guru's---Dhadley, Walleyehead, anyone....

Pull the bottom jet plug on the side of the carb bowl and use a jet screwdriver to extract the main jet. Get the number off of the side of the smooth part and we'll see what jets you have...
Loading up and dieing can be something as simple as too high a float level, or even a sticky timing arm in the low position....many things could cause that.
