Re: OMC Stern Drive Impeller removal

Wish me luck Thursday I'm gonna launch at ramp $12 cost to test boat near shore that way if temp rises I can shut it down immediately. Normal operating temperature should be 120 or so right and nothin more? (GM350). Not that it will matter engine size but figured I add that.

I don't want to pay someone to do work I can so just gonna take time, heck one day I may have to do it on my own and might as well learn now.

So just an idea before you take it out what i did is went to my local hardware store (McFadden Dale) and got a clear hose so i can see if water is pumping in to the engine like it should.

Which im glad i had becuase when i just test launched my boat last week i found that my Port side engine was not pumping the water. Im in process of changing my water pump now.

So far i have pull my whole drive off, disconnected shift wires, and now tomorrow i will start pulling apart my top housing. to get to the water pump. (i only have approx 1-2 hours day) and only myself and i have been working on it just fine. Yes it heavy, and yes it takes longer but that is my get away from everything time. :)

If you know how to work a wrench and you are smart enough to take pictures or notes along the way you have nothing to worry about.

See pictures of my test drive unit that im taking a part right now so when i take apart the newer drive i know what to expect. IMAG0100.jpgIMAG0095.jpgIMAG0097.jpg

Also here is a cut sheet of the upper gear housing. I have the full catalog if you want i can email it to you. Just send me a PM.Upper Gear Housing Stringer.jpg

Yea thanks for that information, the only test I did this far is run on garden hose but that does not run through impeller so therefore it was not a legit test. Although it kept my motor cool and engine ran fine and with my starboard exhaust draining in to my bilge because I didn't hook it up I had water flow, good thing! Again though it bypassed impeller so need to perform test another way such as dock it and run it.

I don't mind this way because it allows me to launch boat tie it to dock and run it quick but also original owner didn't put boat all the way forward on trailer anyhow so now I have chance to set it right up against the bow bumper!

I will PM you later sorry on phone and can't figure out how to PM you from phone viewing of website.

Southkog,

I'm gonna change it but eager to test at ramp and your right higher idle will increase engine temps so it might work at dock but then open water things could go sour. At least boat will get me to my fishing spot near dock since its 5mph in a no wake zone only lol. Launch boat run it, slow speed to fishing spot for a hour or so and then reposition correctly on trailer!!!!

Plus doing so during week I can avoid heavy traffic times at launch site.

Then last a beer!

I'm going to order impeller kit with housing next week and start the break down of my sterndrive.

If I can rebuild my neighbors carburetor for his boat (Rochester) 4bbl and yes turn wrenches no problems then I got this. By the way his boat is running sweet now and he splashed it yesterday in Long Beach. Only to call me and thank me a million times.

Can't justify paying someone near $350 when I can pay $55 and DIY. That will put more gas in my large 24.5' vessel lol

Thanks and this quadrant gear which I referred to as triangle gear doesn't have to be out back in same spot or should I mark it?
no need to index it

The OMC manuals actually do say to mark the ball gears and reassemble to same timing for best ball gear life, but I don't think too many folks bother with that. But if you can remember, might as well.

AGREE. :) Spent 55 bucks on ebay and it was a guy in Aliso Viejo that was selling it and i should have it tomorrow.

Where are you going to launch out of? I went to Sunset Aquatic in Hunting Harbor and it was nice because they have multiple lanes and you wont be bothering anyone if you even leave it on the trailer.

You have a pic of your boat?

Sunset Aquatic Park is exactly where I go. Your right 4 lanes and since I work right at the military base have connections with OC harbor in the event something goes bad.

And that is where I launch all the time and my fishing spot well can't really give that secret up lol but let's just say before Anaheim bridge but when I'm not on boat working at the base has privileges to fish areas where no one can. I can take some of locals anytime if you like for all the help you guys provide for me.

I will email what photos I do have of my boat and later post them up so everyone can see my rig.
