Re: OMC stern Drive removal

ii will agree they are alot easier to find, rather than rebuilding, for one to rebuild it, with new parts would cost literally an arm and a leg.

and since these units rarely fail, (the intermediate housing that is) there isnt a real high demand for these things, and u can get a real nice one dirt cheap.

I live in washington state, and my intermediate housing, had a bent input shaft to the engine block.

I found a salvage dude, in tumwater, wa his name is patrick, and he has a ton of Intermediate units, outdrives..... everything.

i purchased my PERFECT condition intermedaite housing.... bell housing attached with trim motor.... for 200 bux, and this thing is purty!

also picked up a prop for another 40 bux!

look around they are everywhere!

Re: OMC stern Drive removal

so I am thinking I need to remove the intermediate housing then is there anything special I need to know about doing that?
What about the boot on the transom Can I re-use that or will i need to get a new one?
I still have not been able to get the shift cable loose, it seems real tight and the book says not to pull to hard.... I have put vasiline on the cable but still hard to pull and afraid to pull to hard.

I am wondering if there was anything special you had to do to pull the intermediate housing off of the bell housing. I am trying to split mine and it won't pull off the bell housing despite attempts to use a prybar. All of the 1/2in nuts are removed. The bell housing will also not come lose from the engine block. Any suggestions would be hugely appreciated. Is it possible the intermediate shaft is rusted onto the flywheel coupling? ?If so what options do I have?

Don't try to split the intermediate from the engine until you remove the intermediate shaft.
Go to the back and remove the seal retainer (keep the shims and do not damage them) - you might have to bar the engine over to get the ball gear out of the way of the bolts.
Pry the shaft out with a heel bar.
If it wont come you might have to roll everything on it's side and shoot some penetrant at the engine coupler splines.

Appears to be too much rust with the intermediate shaft refusing too pull out of the flywheel coupler. Either that or I'm not getting the penetrant into the right area. Any thing left to try?

ok so the drive is out of the way the bearing retainer bolts are off? So with a crow bar, or hammer claw, slip the pry behind a ball on the ball gear, and gently try to move the ball shaft out. Not moving, tap the ball shaft in, to break the rust. pry, tap, pry, tap it will come out.

Stringers you can remove the motor without removing the drive. Hook up the hoist and remove the nuts on the mounts gently lift the motor till it clears the front obstructions and move the motor 6 inch's forward.
