Inherited a 1989 Avanti 16 footer with a 4.3 OMC and a Corbra Sterndrive. It sat for 2 years before I got it. I ran it once to see how it did and realized that it needed an overhaul and tuneup. The lower unit was full of water and milky oil and the engine missed constantly. I tuned up the engine and it purrs like akitten. I changed the seals on the lower unit and filled with new oil. Took it back out and it ran great. I thought I would check everything again and had more water in the Lower Unit. I re-did seals and all seemed well after running it a few times.

Then the other day, going down the river, it kept pulling to port everytime I accelerated. I suspected the U-Joint but before I could get back to the ramp something gave. I lost all propulsion and briefly heard a grinding. I thought it was coming from the upper unit. It won't go into gear at all now and the upper unit drive shaft is real hard to turn. THe lower unit has a soft grind in it but feels ok (a little loose). Any ideas???

Ayuh,... Ya Blew the Drive...

Pull it Off,+ take it Apart....

I'm Sure the Problem will be evident when you get to it....

If the Upper gears took a Dump,...
The Lower will also need to be torn down,+ Rebuilt....
They share the same oil,+ the Trash from 1 gets into the other....

Re: OMC Sterndrive problems

Is there a trick to getting the lower off the upper? The upper gears look good and the oil had little trash but once again is milky. I figure I will be doing a complete overhaul.

what kind of turning force or noises do you get now with the halves seperated? You should get a slight clicking sensation while turning the intermediate shaft in the lower from the clutch dogs. Turning the main diveshaft in the the upper should be fairly smooth.

Re: OMC Sterndrive problems

Upper unit is great.. Lower unit has an eaten clutch dog, front gear, pinion gear and reverse gear. I got the shift rod back in there and I am "depressing the detent" (not sure what that means???) read it in the book... Anyway I CAN'T get the dang prop shaft out... Any sugestions or tricks.... It doesn't want to budge... Pinion gear is out and the shaft seems hung on something???

Wasn't it fun getting that big external snap ring off, a little heat works wonders for aluminum you can't get it too hot with propane, but useing oxy-cety can be disasterouse.

Thats why i leave the cobra posts alone, between the stringer and the cobra i actually prefer the stinger internal design.

I actually made the snap ring pliers myself instead of buying a 70 dollar pair.

Re: OMC Sterndrive problems

The crazy thing is that there wasn't a snap ring in there. I bet that is what lead to my problem. Who ever my family had rebuild this thing 6 years ago never put it back in....

After looking closer, the reverse is only missing 2 teeth and the clutch dog seems to be ok...

Pinion is GONE as is the forward. Where is a good place to buy just these gears, as well as a snap ring???

Now you might hate me for this but, they should be changed out in a set.

E-bay has them get the right ones. Same tooth count. < Try this first saw a set just recently.

Or e-basic power.

Might be cheaper just to get a lower, on ebay also.

Before I start ordering... Are there any suggested items to replace in the process? Should I get a Transom Kit and go ahead and change the gimbel bearing and bellows?

Re: OMC Sterndrive problems

You better order all the special tools required for shimming the gears properly, or your new stuff won't last very long. Gears come as matched sets and must have the proper contact. Using the old shims won't even be close.

Re: OMC Sterndrive problems

Everywhere I've looked they are expensive. I found an aftermarket set for 299 + Seal Kits + shims + Gimbel bearing = about 400....

I don't want to buy aftermarket but they are so much cheaper.

Everything OMC is aftermarket now days. OMC went out of buisness over 10 years ago.

Re: OMC Sterndrive problems

If you do find a set of New Old Stock original gears the price will be unreal..
I doubt there are any to be had anyway.

Good luck, either way you go is going to cost you...
