Hi guys! Ya I'm back. I got a tilt question again. I need a thin nylon washer (thrust washer?) in front of the worm gear... I need a new one, will any nylon washer work, even if its a little thicker? My original question for coming here though... I was reading old threads, someone said that there needs to be washers between the hammer coupling and the tilt motor. My book doesn't show the other side. Let me rephrase... somehow... from front to back.... Tilt motor, washer(?), hammer coupling, washer (?) shaft, thin nylon wash, worm gear......... ???

I figured that the part in the pic before the washer and worm gear is the brass bushing?

Side question, I saw a pic of a Tilt LOCK mechanism type lever somewhere while researching, is that a thing?

Thanks !

Update... I actually found thin nylon washers at my local Ace Hrdw. Should I put one behind the hammer coupling?
Also my freaking worm gear shaft is showing a tiny crack starting at the end where it attaches to the hammer coupling. This is my 2nd shaft bought it off ebay years ago used. It seems to be a very weak point in this tilt system. I ran the original down full down switch and the out drive just slammed down and sheered that groved end. So I had to replace it... Now I just tap it down.
I see this on google ---- "
Models from 1983–1985 feature an adjustment screw on the back of the tilt clutch to manage spring compression and proper tension. [1]"
Should I loosen it if I can find it?

I don't actually know the answer on the nylon washer. I don't recall mine having one.

There's something strange about the stress on the worm gear if you're getting cracks in them. The clutch pack should pretty much hold the drive in place. If the drive is slamming down - or even coming down really hard - while you've got things assembled, then I think something is wrong with your clutch pack.

The clutch pack has to be able to slip just enough to absorb the drive bottoming out. However you still have to be careful lowering the drive. I have seen the ends of the tilt motor shearing off.
With the drive up try loosening the clutch pack set screw enough where the drive will slip down. drain the housing. Then run the tilt motor in both directions. This will allow the clutch plates free up. Refill it with motor oil. Then turn the adjustment screw in until you fell it touch the tension bar, then another 1/2 turn. With the boat in the water try backing and check the drive stays down. If it comes up give the set screw another 1/4 turn.
The plastic washers center the hammer blow coupling.

Also after the oil is added to the clutch housing run the tilt motor in both directions to circulate the oil on the clutch plates.

Thanks I'll give that a shot.
After looking at the book closer, it seems I'm missing the Hammer Coupling retainer, the gets installed before the coupling. I'll bet thats the reason my shaft is starting to crack. I cant find a replacement, anyone have a part number or source?
Thanks

Are you missing the spring that holds the coupling together? I may have one in my stash of OMC parts.
I have the spring. Im missing the coupling retainer. And a nylon washer. The book isnt specific on it.. Ill upload pics of the book. Hopefully someone has a parts book.

OMG I think I found it on EBAY pn 909513. cant upload the pic though...I just kept adjusting my search words and finally got a hit. I still need to find this mysterious nylon washer. My hardware store has them, but I dont know how thick it should be.
