looking at buying another boat this week. A 1988 sunbird Eurosport 2. Has the 350 4 bolt mains. With OMC outdrive. Does anyone have any opinions with this setup?
Yup. Don't

If the drive fails I can at least throw a merc at it.
Ayuh,...... Dumping 3 or 4,000 bucks into a 31 year old entry level hull sure don't sound like a wise investment to me,.....
Even if it was free to begin with,......
Is this the type of boat you're talking about?Tks for all the input that I asked for. But I am still on the fence about it.
It is exactly like that except green in color with yellow trim. The one I am looking at is for $3800. All I have seen is pics though. Right now I am sporting a 1985 wellcraft 170 American of which I just replace the timing cover today.

I bought my Starcraft powered by a Cobra when it was 4 years old. I owned it for only 2 years when the floor rotted despite me making sure the boat was protected from the elements. I knew squat about boats but learned quick from going to the library & doing reserarch. I jumped in & pulled out the rotten floor & it wasent pretty. They fastened the floor to the stringers with staples which weren't even stainless because most of them were like dental floss. Then they left them exposed. The glass work was a joke underneath, the layup of the glass was poorly done resulting in delamination which rotted the stringers. I did the work myself & it lasted for years. Now the transom is shot so I'm parting it out as the motor purrs like a kitten & the drive is also still good. Like you, i will never buy another sterndrive unless it's new or close to it. Cobras are good drives imho but too many parts are now nla & the shift system setup looks like it was designed by commitee. That was part of the reason for the company's downfall.I have to agree with all that has been said...I've owned the '88 Four Winns with the 4.3 OMC Cobra...and while the drive itself has been great...so has the transom mount and related parts...with none of the problems that Merc Alphas are known for in salt water (leaky rusty steering arms, loose hinge pins, steering play) the lack of techs to do repairs, and the difficulty in sourcing certain parts, is a real problem. I had the old batwing exhaust (one piece units on the V6 models) and had to investigate swapping over to the later style center riser exhaust because the batwings have been NLA over 10 years. I was able to do it but had to buy over $400 worth of Volvo Penta parts (90* exhaust pipes, hoses) to make it work. If the drive blew I can still get one rebuilt from Crowley Marine. However, if that does happen, a better plan would be to convert the Cobra to a VP/SX, this is a well known conversion that can be done with used parts and the SX is a big upgrade, equivalent to a Bravo strength wise and smoother shifting. But it all costs money, I would only do this because this boat has been pretty much 100% restored at this point.
So don't do it to yourself with all the good Merc powered boats out there, that will have none of these issues....I taught myself to do the OMC shift adjustment jokingly kidding with my OMC techs a few years back because "what will I do when you retire"....and this fall....they did! The guy who owns our boatyard bought their shop, he probably can do it as well, but good thing I know how to do it myself and have the 3 OMC tools needed to do it....I bet if you called 10 shops, 9 would say they don't work on them or don't work on boats that old.
Then there's the reality of wood and 'glass construction, I fixed plenty of rot on my '88 FW, I can tell you that's a job I'd NEVER EVER DO AGAIN. If I do get another boat....it will be nearly new....and powered by a modern outboard....
