o.m.c. outboard marine corporation was the parent company of johnson/evinrude/omc stern drive/omc cobra sterndrive/lawnboy and a few others also omc boat group. in the eighties they started to become miss managed the practice contiued for years (different owners/managers). until in year two thousand the owners completed the raping of the company. bankruptcy was announced december 23 y2k.
the assests where bought up buy various companies/corperations with bombardier getting evinrude/johnson the sweetest plumb.
bombardier has since sold the outboard division to brp (bombardier recreational products).
brp represents ski-doo sea-doo evinrude/johnson and a couple of other recreational toys.

In December of 2001, OMC closed its doors. In March of 2002, Bombardier bought the names and some of the facilities and "resurrected" Johnson and Evinrude. By October of 2002, Bombardier built a new state of the art production facility and was producing a vastly improved line of outboards only 7 months after the winning bid on the OMC's bankruptcy auction.

Yea, and didn't Mercs CEO tell someone (After Bomb announced it would be running in a year) that bomb would never make it in a year, and better bring a pair of sandals????...because it would take an act of God for that to happen...
I would guess Mercs CEO is not sleeping well anymore.

Mercs CEO is probably figgering out a way to sue Bombardier like they have done in the past to their competitors.

nahh merc is to busy trying to spell merc in chinese :) . they got no time to mess with BRP now. to busy setting up the deal with Tohatsu and china.
maybe the chinese black anchors will work better than the fon dulac black anchors. well at least tohatsu can bail them out, unless they get sued as well.

Re: OMC whays the deal???

I've been a JohnnyRude lover for 60 years and have had many wonderful engines from 2 to 150 hp. NEVER had a lemon.

OMC died of terrible management and incomplete development of the Ficht V6s before putting them on the market.

That says nothing of the quality of the other engines. There are more 40s, 50s and 60s JohnnyRudes still in service than Merc even sold in those days.

I believe that BRP is making even better engines than OMC even dreamed of. Better than Brunswick, too, and they are making them in N. America (except the 4 strokes, which are all very well made by Suzuki).

Now. Regarding the "only advantage" the ETEC family has over other DFI engines. Which is it, service interval, oil consumption, clean emissions, fuel efficiency, or performance???

Also, don't forget ETEC are lighter engines when comparing to 4 strokes too.

All I can say is, "I wish I had one", but I don't...I do however, feel sorry for the competition as they have no Idea how fast they are sinking....poor guys.
And... to top things off, the competition still hasn't been hit in the face with the "Real Deal" yet...man, this is going to be quite a year...Rude back on top for world record speed, record sales...oh man I wish I was back in a dealers outfit...

Is that really true? Are there really that many Fat Fiftys, electric shift and other OMC products out there in operation - more than Merc even produced in its Kiekhaefer heyday? Not disputing at all - just pointing out that that is a mind boggling statement at face value. Would you say that the smaller HP models account for the majority of older, vintage OMCs out there? I have a 76 70 HP Evinrude and have found it to be bulletproof over the years. I also have a mid 70s Inline 6 1500 that I'm equally impressed with - so I'm not trying to stir the pot at all.. :D

Re: OMC whays the deal???

I don't really know that, 2Cycle, but I do believe it. I am thinking mainly of the 3 to 60hp twins and basing my belief on the number of requests for info or help on small engines of that period.

Re: OMC whays the deal???

jb omc died of miss management.
early ficht although not perfect worked and work fine if properly serviced
that was/is the problem no dealer wants to pay for service training and at the same time expects technicians to repair outboards that the've never seen
also you are correct with the 1960,s etc engines it would take mercury etc years to match the sales numbers for johnson
