anybody use it and any tips when installing it? We ordered one because we can't keep our dog in the yard,he climbs the 5' chain link fence. I asked the vet today if he had any tips because he was fixed and he said to run a hot wire around the top and he would only have to hit it 1 time and he wouldnt do it again. I live in town so thats out of the question.

Not that I am for hurting dogs but do understand your problem. However you can do this even with in a city without the worry about hurting kids or dumb adults. <br /><br />Use insulaters to run the wire about a foot down on your side of the fence and about a foot inside your fence. The doggie in question wont be able to jump above or crawl under it without being zapped! My neighbor two houses down had the same problem in the 80's with his dog on a 6ft chain link fence. I brought him over to my back yard and showed him my transmitting antenna. He installed it the same way and his (spotty) tried three time while we were watching.. (we did not like watching) but after three months he cut the power to it and she never tried again.<br /><br />Just a thought.. worked for him.. but she wasn't a Rott or PitBull.. <br /><br />Nothing happens by chance Spinner! Just today we were at storage and a unleashed Rottie walking up to us.. kindest eyes you would ever want to see..<br />but to me it was a flash back.. 1988 when a 170 lb Rotti tried to tear my throat out.. if it hadnt of been for Mrs.Link I would have blown that POS away with a 45 ACP! She acted like she didnt notice.. :) <br />As you know she did notice.. but was still calm..

Could you angle the top of the fence inwards so he can't climb it or is he likely to hurt himself?

Problem with those is they won't work during power failure. During our outage from an ice storm, several dogs were let out only not to return :( . So if you do get an electric type fence, keep that in mind.

My neighbor has had one in for a couple years now. It is so effective that he doesn't even turn it on anymore, the dog just knows his boundaries after the first few zapparoos. I like it because there aren't as many land mines in my yard to pick up.

Re: ? on invisible dog fencing update

I tried one of those before. It was effective as far as keeping the dog in but it does nothing to keep the neighbors dogs out. The one I had would make a chirping sound when the dog got in close proximity to the fence, if he continued to get any closer then the collar would zap him. I had to stop using it because as soon as it got dark in the evening the crickets would start chirping and he would run for the porch where he would lay all night traumatized!

Re: ? on invisible dog fencing update

they work well if you train the dog to it...<br /><br />sbn they also have higher voltage ones for big dogs..<br /><br />HOWEVER...if there is something on the other side of the fence big dogs will just run through the zone...<br /><br />Mine had a 30 foot zone and that worked well.<br /><br />dont forget to ground the unit as well as lighting storms use the ground wire as a giant antenna..

Re: ? on invisible dog fencing update

we bought a lightning arrestor with it if it gets hit all we have to do is pay postage to get a new one.We get alot of lightning out here so i think its worth it. when we are home the dog is in the house with us but likes to be outside too. I have tried putting wire mesh fence over the top on the corners but 2 things it looks like crap and he still figures out how to get out. I told my wife i will install it she trains him with it. We haven't had a problem with other animals in our yard just ours in other yards.

I have one. Installed it using a small trencher I rented. Took about half a day to install. I fenced in a rectangle around 400x60. You have to train the dog by walking around the perimeter over a couple of days. Our dog won't cross it unless the power is out. Once they do though they must be retrained. I have been real pleased with it. Be sure and make the wire run continous - no splices. It will fail at the splice and it is a pain to find. I also made my three young boys take a shock to deter any urge they might have to tease the dog into shock range.

I have one that is wireless and have a radius of around 90 ft. Put it on my dog and that help. No planting of wire or any sort. The dog wear a collar with a small box and when it wonder out of the range and it zapp the dog with a small charge and the dog learn very quick not to wonder out of it range. Before the dog wonder out of the range it emit an audible sound to warn the dog. Given enough time the dog will learn not to venture beyond what is allowed. The product is Pet Safe. Go on the web and type pet safe on the search engine. I works for me. <br /><br /><br />"Let the buyer beware."

I tried one and did not really like it. Because the dog could run through it when he was chasing a squeal. Then he could not get back into the yard. If your yard is fenced run a electrical fence wire around the inside of your fence and he will never get out again.

Re: ? on invisible dog fencing update

I would not have a dog without it!!!<br /><br />I have had the invisible fence since I got the puppy. The only 2 times he went thru after the training was following my daughter, once down the front sidewalk, after whinning for 5 minutes watching her play in the front lot, he decide it was worth the shock. The other time he followed her down the driveway. Now to get him to go near either spot, I must have my hand on him. What a pain to get him in the car!!!<br /><br />The younger they are when you put the fence in the easier it is to train them. <br /><br />Our dog does not seem to care of the fence or collar is on, he will not go to the wire. He has sat and watch deer and other dogs go by, with out trying to pass the fence. <br /><br />Installing it was easy. I rented a gas trimmer for Home Depot, and had them put 2 blades on it. The only had parrt was the stone driveway. Took 2 hours with a trencher. I put out 800 feet of wire. Once I was thru the driveway it took me and my wife 90 minutes to put the entire system in.

Had one for a few years.<br /><br />Lightning knocked it out twice. (blew the thing right off the wall once)<br /><br />Dog--a short-haired pointer--was smart enough to test it on a regular basis.<br /><br />Worked for about a year and a half, then she learned to run through it quickly. Once they figure that out it is useless.<br /><br />Jinx

Some dog's are so determined that the fence dosn't work on them no matter what the voltage is. My neighbor has a Weimaraner that cracks me up. He knows he's going to get zapped and you can watch him psyching himself up before he runs through the electrical field. But, he takes a licking and keeps on ticking. When he gets ready to come home, he goes through the same procedure.

Re: ? on invisible dog fencing update

Well we finally got it hooked up and the wife said she wondered what it felt like I said dunno( hehehe) so she tried it and man did she howl :D . put it on the dog and he learned real quick when it beeps to go the other way. Wife said I am enjoying seeing him get hit  but if it keeps him in and keeps us from getting a ticket for him running loose or biting someone its worth it.
