Only one gear oil plug????

Johnson VRO 140 V4. 1996.

Would like to change the gear oil but manual says there should be two slotted screws - one to fill, one to drain.

Not on my engine there ain't! only 1 slotted screw 2 inches below lower unit joining edge (assumes this is for level setting). 1 Philips screw 2 inches below that (bearing retainer) and nowt anywhere else.

May have wrong manual!

Can anyone advise?

I made the same mistake.....the other screw is on the bottom underneath where you can't see it...

No way you don't have a drain and vent plug on that motor. Look again.

Thanks for the quick response.

Model number BM140A. - i know it doesn't seem right but this is the model number from the transom plate and it definately is a 1996 140 as all info on the id plate.

Still can't see any other plug anywhere on the lower unit. Looking around Skeg area and front of gear box. Still nothing.....help!

Just tried using a high powered torch - incase it's been painted over. Nothing.

Assuming that prop and shaft needs to be removed to drain oil?

Have you owned the motor since new? I'm thinking that someone stripped the lower screw threads and their fix was to fill the hole with weld material or something else.

Cannot find your model number anywhere on the net. Look at the left transom clamp. There should be a rectangular sticker that has a model number that starts with a J.

Re: Only one gear oil plug????

Guys thanks for all your replies.

No I bought engine second hand. Plug Could have been welded over. I've scrapped surface back - No evidence of any fill!

Model number from plate under transom (where it normally is) Serial number (numbers only)which is also on plate matches number on welch plug! I'm aware that no one can find the model - i have a another post for this very purpose.

Photos attached. You can seen level plug only.

Re: Only one gear oil plug????

Looks like the skeg has sustained damage at one time, and the beefed up, bolted on plates are hiding damage. I am also suspecting that someone has welded over, or body puttied the drain plug due to damage.
