my 19 year old son is on lake mojave right now with his 1959 larson playmate and '63 merc 650. i told him he should have a sticker made for the back that says "same fun..... on less funds. it's a cool old boat. i don't remember where i heard this, "a confident man can afford to have a modest appearance"

My 79 Thundercraft is the oldest boat I have seen up in the great white north der hey. (eagle lake canada) I keep it just for fishing, and the lodge owner thought it might be too old until he saw it. Very well maintained and low hours on it. so what do I care, it does the job and I do not care if it gets a little bloody and fish smelling. :D

I have a 72 Glastron V-177 that has been in my family since 1974, I have been thinking about a new boat for a while now but can not justify a payment for something I only use a few months out of the year. I was out on the lake on Sunday and saw three other older boats.

thanks jay.its actually a cedarstrip boat.weighs 500 lbs and goes pretty good ,the beauty of cedarstrip is the light weight and toughness and the fact that you dont need to go even close to max hp to get good performance though im there.it,s actually registered as homemade though it started life as a giesler brothers boat but has been redone strip by strip.they are still in bussiness after 70 years, and one similar to mine is approx 4500 cnd dollars.ive been looking at new motors and am shocked at how much they weigh,a 75 optimax is 375 lbs!!!! im looking at maybe a 70 direct injected nissan or maybe even a 50 nissan which would be plenty of power for her.

I know what you mean about the light weight and toughness. I had two Whirlwind cold molded mahoghany boats and both shared that characteristic. They were extremely strong and weighed very little.

They were also of the very same design as yours, with the V tapering into a flat bottom. Between the flat bottom and the light weight, they don't need much power to run in th 30 - 40 mph range.

Here's what a Whirlwind looks like.

I saw this boat being launched onto Michigan couple weeks back, what a beautiful, lovingly taken care of and restored boat. 68 years old.

opinions are like butts everybody has one, and they all stink! do you like the boat? are you happy with it? that's what matters! plenty of people will look at any of ours and turn up a nose. Don't lose sleep over them.

my stinky opinion? i think it looks sharp! most of the boats here do! the ones that currently don't, will really soon!

let the mega dollar yacht owners look down their noses. When their boats get repoed, yours won't be. newer isn't always better. look at some of the beauties posted. yours is just as nice. when you work on it, you don't need an engineering degree. haters hate no matter what. only your opinion matters on your boat.
mine's 22 years old, and plug ugly, but it's mine, not the bank's

Re: Only one with a 35+ yr old boat on my lake

I've got an old glasspar lido from the late '50's. Been out on the lake with it, and I've gotten a few comments. But the lakes I go out on usually have boats from all eras. Currently, my glasspar is in the "project" status. Been wondering if I want to work on it or keep it since I take my '76 lund out to fish. But I just like the lines of my glasspar. Too hard to part with it. Some time I'll get it up and running again and use it as my recreation boat.

Nothing against new boats, but something about the character of older boats...I just enjoy it more.

BTW, great looking crestliner. Looks like you baby it.
