Re: Ooo! Sparkly! Redfury's Grinding again!

Lowkee, I have so many thread subscriptions on this site, it takes me 2 minutes in my email just to go through them and see if I read the last post in them or not :) You can also set the subscription to update you immediately, or once a day, etc...which is really nice for threads that have a lot of activity, or ones that you want to follow closely and be involved in without sitting on the refresh button for a few hours.

This next picture is just to show that indeed, everyone gets their "injury" of types when restoring their boats, usually out of their own stupidity or not paying attention. I literally had just gotten done telling my kids the dangers of compressed air, because I leave it on and accessible 24/7 during my build and kids being curious....

So, I did some light grinding and didn't wear my suit, so I went and blew myself off with the compressor....except I managed to drive some of the dust into my skin. This picture is after a week of suffering with a fiberglass dust rash...this is the itchy stuff! now, it's just a rash and irritates me because I did it, and it's still there, not because it is irritating in a physical way...fortunately.

Like that balloon idea!!! I'll have to check my bits, may have one small enough for that. Use them everyday being a plumber. Have them from 1 3/8 to 4 5/8, but I have a Dewalt set with some smaller ones. Oh my bigger bits I only use on low speed on my Dewalt right angle drill. Low speed has cluch:eek:

oh yeah, I know the feeling. Living in south Fla, last week I was just doing some chipping on the boat with the air chisel and decided on wearing shorts and a t-shirt because of the heat. Big mistake, that rash is no joke when it first comes up. You just want to scratch the skin right off.

I found for those days when my skin wanted to just burn itself off, using foot powder worked wonders. That blue bottle anti-itch foot powder stuff. It apparently works for the rest of the body, as there were days when the second water touched me it felt as though nothing short of a grinder wheel would scratch the itch, and that powder helped calm it down to a normal itch. No idea why I originally bought that foot powder, but I'm seriously glad I did.

If I had it to try over again, I think I'd probably use two balloons or find something stronger. I got these from the local grocery store. The long balloon would be the best way to go instead of the standard round ones, that way you will have an even amount of balloon on each side.

BTW, the holes cleaned up really nice once I took the dremel to it with a deburring bit on it. I wanted to be able to run my finger through it and not get caught up on it so debris would have a better chance of getting through it.

Gota look arond the shop some. We have some expanding hard rudder plug we put in pipe, like themos plug. I just remembered I have a set of Jet Sweats on the truck, 1/2, 3/4, 1". They expand inside of pipe to stop water flow inorder to sweat in a new shutoff valve. SWEEEEEET!!!!!

Re: Ooo! Sparkly! Redfury's Grinding again!

Well, not much to report on the boat....I started working on the center stringer, then we get rain and tornado's this week... I need to do some more grinding on the hull...I was putting it off and should have done it a while ago, but after zipping through the hull in a few areas, I didn't want to do anymore grinding.....Now that I know how well a 60 grit flapper works, I'm going to get back on it. But, I'm going to find the dust collection attachment that's out there somewhere for grinders. I don't want all the dust getting into the pool...that would kinda suck getting that in your eyes and mouth and ears and ....let your imagination wander

So, I laminated 2 one inch ( 3/4 inch actual dimension ) 2x12x12's with some extra length added.

100_2126.jpg
This time I worked on getting the stringer level with the hull so I will have an easier time cutting it flush.
100_2127.jpg

The extended portion that you can see part of above, was done by setting my router to half the depth of the wood with my machinists rule and routing 4 boards 6 inches deep. Essentially, I cut a tab on the extended part of the stringer and a notch in the stringer board. The part that sticks out towards the back has no real need for support of the hull. It's just there to support the batteries in back.
100_2129.jpg
100_2128.jpg

and then it rained the next day, and the next day....probably will rain the next day too! I'm not having much luck when it comes to working with wood outdoors. If anything, this is just confirming my NEED for a garage/shop.

Those chairs in that center picture look a little weird. No rear legs? That rain can realy hold things up. Rains almost everyday here in this so called sunshine state of Florida.

Heh, yeah, I really need to cut that grass! The legs curve toward the back and connect...they are kinda springy chairs.

Re: Ooo! Sparkly! Redfury's Grinding again!

Well, the old Lawn tractor is giving me fits....I put a fuel filter on it and cleaned out the carb again because it was surging, now the darn thing doesn't want to run, and when it does it runs like carp! Hmph. So, I did the next best thing...putz around on the boat.
I bought 2 4x8 sheets of 1/2 foam insulation and made some cardboard templates and then transferred them to the foam so I have some "hard copies" when I get to putting in the floor. The front section was the hardest, and I've got a gap to deal with, but I have an idea how I can and use the least amount of expensive plywood. I will have to cut at least one of the side storage shelves out to get the wood in though, I had to flex the foam a bit to get it in. It's kinda nice seeing a fake floor in the boat. The piece of wood by the transom is a piece I had cut and set in down in the original bilge/battery tray area.
100_2137.jpg

I have to grind all this away before I can continue working on my center stringer though, and I haven't really had a good opportunity to get the
grinder out...
100_2135.jpg

This is the only thing that has me wondering about my glass job....since there was no finishing wax in the poly because it's laminating grade and the boat has definitely gotten really wet, I don't know if I'm worrying for nothing, or if I should start to now....I don't want anything to fail because I just said "it's good enough".

man red, that looks like it is delaminating. Doesnt it? looks like air pockets that have started to let water soak under it. I would be worried too:redface: Only you can tell for sure but I would try to stick a screw driver under it and pry it. If it comes up Id grind it out and try again...

yeah, that's what I'm planning to do. I must not have wiped the area down well enough with acetone. Stupid thing is, I've got a bag full of wiping cloths and a gallon of acetone just sitting there. :(

Unless I get a good place to work, I don't think I'm going to get the floor in this year, due to cost of the wood and simply not having a decent place to coat wood of that scale. I think I will need to bring the boat into a garage somewhere to lay up all that glass...

I'm thinking of getting something like that...problem is that I can't keep it up for too long, or the city will bark about it. It's stupid really, but it's part of the ordinance.

Funny, I'm sitting here typing this and the Menards ad is opened to the 2 car garages....:D

Yeah we built a PVC pip frame and then laid thick 6mil painters plastic over it. Duct taped it to the side of the boat....... Used to keep rain out and fiberglass dust IN so we don't bother the neighbors. We are trying to keep it as safe as possible for everyone and anyone.

Re: Ooo! Sparkly! Redfury's Grinding again!

Well, it's partially the finances that have slowed down my progression, and I really want to get back on the boat, but it seems like every time I'm getting geared up to do it, something throws me back, like the rain, or the family wants to go do something...

Gotta try to balance that all, and I've not spent much time with the family lately..heck, I haven't been out fishing since memorial day!

I'd truly have to say that I could be diagnosed ADD ;). Which, is why I fit so well with my Job. I do a job, it lasts usually no more than 2 hours and I'm off to the next one. The ones that last longer than that, I lose my motivation quickly. Same thing goes for the boat. I really want to be out working on it, but I lose motivation when I think of dragging everything out, only to have to drag it all back in . I need to have a really good weekend where all my other duties are performed and I don't have an excuse to not get on it!

If I don't have crummy weather this week though, I think I'm going to do a test fit of the cap to make sure my transom clears and that the foam template doesn't distort.

Been there, done that. Menards even sells these nice metal RV shelters that would be perfect for boat building work, provided you could heat them.

But local code prohibits any non permanent (IE without a foundation) accessory structure or any structure that doesn't match the style of the primary structure (house). Plus there are limits on location and amount of accessory buildings.

If I'd known then what I know now about the city's codes, I would have moved much farther out....
