Can't really say for sure if the orientation of the reverse lock cam is correct or not. The orientation depends on what gear the L/U is in. IF the unit is in reverse, then I would say the cam is oriented properly.

That cam (when in reverse) pushes up on a rod in the midsection that actuates the reverse lock clamps on the transom mount. Prevents the motor from kicking out of the water when revving in reverse.

As for lubing the water tube, I always apply a little waterproof grease to easy assembly and reduce corrosion. Not saying thats right or wrong.

I put the throttle in "forward" when i took the lower unit off... but the battery wasn't connected, so i'm not thinking the receiving end of the L/U is still in Neutral.

Is there anyway i can look at the top of where the LU Goes, to see what gears it in ? By looking at the pieces that connect to the L/U Shifting mechanism

The motor was put into forward, and the new lower unit i was told needs to be put in forward when the yellow mark is forward. So i just need to figure out where the plastic piece needs to be situated... or if its already lined up.

Note that the tilt-lock is also engaged when in Neutral.

Best way to get the cam on correctly is to be shifted into Fwd gear.

Turn the driveshaft clockwise (as you look down at the lower unit). The prop should also be turning clockwise.

Then, rotate the shift shaft CCW to shift into Neutral. You'll feel the detent as you're moving from Fwd to Neutral.

Use a pair of suitable pliers or Vise Grips to turn the shift shaft. Put some tape on the plier's jaws, or cushion with a rag, so you don't damage the splines on the shift shaft.

Now, move the shift shaft in the CW direction to shift back into Fwd gear. Only move the shaft as much as is needed to get to Fwd. This won't be much motion at all and you'll feel it dropping into Fwd right away.

Note the position of the shift cam as it relates to the shift interlock rod which is sticking down from the rest of the motor.

If the cam is positioned correctly, the interlock rod will be pointing to a position approx halfway up the ramp of the shift cam. Pull the cam off and reposition as necessary to realign.

Note that with the splined shaft and cam, you'll either be Right On, or Way Off. No in-between.

You'll find that with the interlock rod pointing to halfway up the shift cam's ramp, that when you shift to Neutral the top of the shift cam blocks the rod from moving downwards, which locks the hooks around the tilt pin.

I tried to put back the motor tonight, but the piece where the control cables go into the motor, and attach with the pins, flew back under the motor, and now need to be grabbed... i'm just going to sell it as is, i can't deal with it anymore lol. Got a guy who will take it 475.00 as is, told him i guarantee it will run.

Its not just the chip... its also the water pump copper hose, that i'm not certain is in right, and also the having the motor in gear to install the LU, then matchin up the shifter spline up, w/out having to install the lu a dozen times to get it right... but yeah, at 475 im giving it away, but if i sell the boat trailer for 300, i'll be even... and i'm told the trailer is worth around that, so i'll just glad to have it out of the yard.

You MUST insert the tube back into the engine first. There is no way you could possibly align the tube if you attached it to the pump and then tried to reinstall the lower unit.

Yeah, i put the copper tube up in the engine grommit 1st, it seemed to go in, about 1/4-1/2 in no problem... its holding in place while upside down, so i can only assume its in all the way... time will tell when the LU goes back on.
