Ok it?s my fault I made an hour drive to a lake and left my boat keys at home. I really wanted to fish so I broke my ignition. I jammed a small knife in it and now I would like to get in back to normal to help my chokes not stick. The part is cheap from what the shop told me but when I pulled my throttle apart the ignition wires are soldered to the back. I can?t find the plug I think it is hidden behind throttle linkage. The screws to take it apart are extremely tight. When I tried to loosen them I could see that it was starting to strip out so I stopped. Any Ideas and yes I know I am a bonehead

If you can fit a small set of vicegrips I would try that as well...

There is no plug. To change out the ignition switch you need to warm up a soldering iron....

SO just cut the wires and re-solder them that sucks but it does make sence. Easier that way ok now how do I know if i get the right ingintion by engine serial number or boat model number I hope it is not the model number cause i dont know what it is maybe does anyone know how to get a model number for a boat.

This is what you need. Boat model will make no difference...

Their are only 2 different ignition switch assemblies for Merc outboards. One has a separate choke switch and the other has an integral choke switch. Reading your original post I'd say you have the integral one. But there are 2 different versions of that one... But since you said the wires are soldered, not plugged, then the part number is 87-88107A5.... Any Merc dealer, and it'll cost about $41....

or you could find were you want to cut the wire and buy quick disconnect for the wires and when you get the new switch just hook it up to the quick connect.:)

Guy's, guy's. Listen to Achris and fix it right! Don't rig it. Its not worth it for something as inexpensive as a switch.

Yes I am deffantly going to solder the wires. The last thing I want is a wire conector to come losse in big water and have it short something out.

Good choice. :):):):):)

One thing I hate more than road hogs is... actually there's nothing I hate more than road hogs, but the point is ... by keeping the engine as close to original as you can it will make it so much easier to maintain in the future. And so much more reliable....
