Re: oops's peanut butter recipe.

It's epoxy, CSM, and bubbles mixed to the consistency of peanut butter. Look at his hull extension thread, there's an index on the first post.

If somebody sent him a PM, he might do that in the fiberglass section of the How To sticky.

Re: oops's peanut butter recipe.

If you are using polyester you'd do it the opposite way, thicken the resin with cabosil and add milled fiber for strength if needed, when the consistency is where you want it stir in the catalyst , use it asap.

I find cabosil ( colloidal silica) makes a much smoother paste than ballons.
Ballons don't stop it from running on vertical surfaces but make it a bit easier for sanding, but done correctly sanding shouldn't be needed.

I agree with jonesg,

milled fibers help stir the cabosil in much better...the carbosil will try to blow out of the cup if you dont put the milled fibers on top. I have not had to sand my PB by hand, an angle grinder and a flap wheel make quick work of it regardless of the glass bubbles. I still put them in because I have them, im not so sure what they do though...lol

Re: oops's peanut butter recipe.

I use wood flour for my PB needs. Thickens much faster in smaller quantities than cabosil, is a bit less toxic, spreads into the air much less easily, and when mixed it actually looks like peanut butter. Plus it's got some structural value.

When filling a large gap or on a particularly important structural part I add in chopped fibers (1/4 inch or so) for extra strength.

I've used milled fibers as a thickener too, and they're almost as good as wood flour (milled are the fibers that come as powder, not short strands).

I don't use cabosil for much. I have a big bag of microbubbles that gets used for lightweight putty like fairing or where strength isn't an issue, or I might need to sand.

Re: oops's peanut butter recipe.

i can post the mixture ratios but the mods would have to make it a stickey.

there are two types i use.

both are in the hull threads index.

1. is a filler.....resin...minifibers (milled fibers) glass bubbles or cabosil.

it is allways best to add the mekp to the resin before mixing ....you want to catylize the resin not the mix.

super dooper peanut butter is stronger ....the same as above and add 1/4 inch short strand fibers and also some ripped up long strand.

im doing a swim grid on a chapperall and 3 jet skis right now....so ill take pics and also post the mix ratios for you....but they all work out to 75% filler and 25% resin.....cat at 1.7% (go cold so you have time to add the filler)

if you choose to add the mekp later.....you can mix up a batch and keep it in a sealed container.....it wont go bad

Re: oops's peanut butter recipe.

Hello m8s..

About "self made fillers"..glass or no glass..

1. Epoxy MUST be mixed Before adding agents... ( work fast ).
2. Poly/VE should be mixed with agents Before adding MEKP ( work fast).
3. Use ONLY fillers to resin that you plan on using for your lams ( Poly or Epoxy).
4. You only need Cabosil ( there are IMO 2 kinds.. collodial.. and coladal ( thats not mistype)). collodial silica is VERY bad .. Colodal isnt all that good for you either...
5. Microballons ( red blood cells as we call it ) is for Fairing ONLY.. not for Structural.. you should consider Cabosil. .. yes wear a respo for mixing..
6. Wood dust is good for filling gaps in hardwood seam repairs..but not for gaps or fills.

7. All other fillers should be used for pin hole fills..and not lams or structual ( aside from fillets for stringers ).

YD.
