i have an early 70's merc 115 inline 6 cyl the motor was rebuilt andwhen i got the boat it neede attention due to lack of maintenance i went thru the fuel system and replace as neede to get it functioning properly but it would not run right eventually i found a plastic bag was left in the intake maniflod when they rebuilt the engine. I removed the carbs and cleaned them and reinstalled them and the boat ran great ont the muffs and was going to put it in the water the next day. before i took it all the way to the lake i hooked up the muffs just to test fire the engine and it would not start. I performed what electical tests i know how to do and all checked out fine so i talked to a guy who works on outboards alot and he suspected a bad connection so i began running wires and cleaning connections. I found 2 bad wires and replaced them plus cleaned all the connections and ground wires. Every time i would find a bad wire i would attempt to start the engine and it would fire right up for that day if it sits overnite it will not start hte next day this has happened three4 days in a row. Today i went out and removed a couple of wires and just wiped the off as i have already cleaned the conections and it fired right up. I am not so good at electrical and boats are a new thing to me i figure i have a switch that is sticking open but have no idea if this is correct. If it is correct what switch would it be and where is it located / I know a manual is a good inveatment but am on a fixed income and have been spending money on the parts i know i need so a manaul has not fit into the budget yet. So far this boat i got for "free" has cost me a couple of dollars and i still have not been able to take my son and grandkids fishing. Any help is always appreciated and in advance thank you for the help

Re: open switch

i do not need to choke it i set the fast idle lever all the way up,turn it over she will attempt to start then a reduce to half way up and when she caughts i set it almost all the way down and wait for about 5 seconds then put it all the way down and she is running good and it about 1 minute she goes to a great idle and will rev great if i lift the fast idle but i do not peg it wide open just enough to see that it will pick up rpm's. In the past i did try to choke it and it took forever to get it to start i seem to have one a rare one as i know several other guys with engines almost identical to mine and they have to choke the dog doo out of them to get them up and running. that is why i tried it with mine but kinda stumbled onto how to start mine one day when iwas just turning it over to check some stuff out and did not choke it and found that it needs no choking to start just the fast idle lever will do the trick but thank you for the input. I will probably need to choke it in the future mine may start so well right now because the motor is new it has maybe one hour run time on it and if i shut it off i just flick the key and she fires up in a split second ( literally it starts that fast ) maybe thats my problem something to do with my timing ?
