opinions needed, lets see who knows there types of woods!

Replacing the lift out center board on the floor of my 84 model boat.. the pics are below..what kind of plywood is it? is that marine or exterior? I'll just put back whatever it is. Also whats good to coat it with?? It's actually not hurt but one spot at the edge is slighty soft so I wanna just replace it.

and this looks the sameas the middle lift out board to me..

here is my thoughts, I think the main lift out board covered in carpet is exterior grade 1 plywood...I also think the last picture that little strip of wood is also exterior grade 1 plywood..you agree?

and the other 2 pics look like white oak but I wanted to be sure before I went and bought all new wood...thanks

The Top pic looks about like CDX or maybe a step Better...

The Bottom pic is a construction grade Mahogany....

You're kdiding about it being CDX right? from what I know CDX is meant for indoor use and to not be around water...surely thats not what that is.

the very bottom pic being mahogany? looks like the same as what your calling CDX to me.


as far as something easy to get to in such a place as lowes and home depot is there a certain sealant I should buy that will fit this application better than the other? the wood in the pics above was obviously treated with soemthing that gave it a glossy finish.

**Also with say the main center lift outboard..after I cut the new plywood to match...what do you suggest or what does it look like the old one was sealed with? epoxy or poly resin???? this will as in the pictures have a thin layer of carpet over it.

would lowes or home depot sell the type of sealer thats suited for this application? I'm new to this but epoxy or poly resin is what I think you would use on it...looks like thats what the old had on it? not sure though.

I sealed my new decking with epoxy resin - but it was and is not necessary. If you want to go the glass route then poly will work just fine.
There are also a bunch of other 'waterproofing' materials. Some folks just slather on a couple of coats of oil based paint, some use CPS - whatever you do get the edges really good.

what does it look like they used on the original center lift out board piece? that lasted pretty good....

does it simply look like they put something like thompon's water sealer or oylimpic sealer stuff they sell at lowes or something..or is that epoxy/poly resin?

not sure how either would look but something is on it, it looks somewhat glossy and clear. You can tell the finish really good on the 2nd picture down.

Judging from the size of the knots, it is not marine grade plywood. Actually, not many boat manufacturers use marine grade plywood in the decking of their boats.

The original coating is probably polyester or vinylester resin. Any good grade plywood will work. Seal well with poly resin and it will last a few years. Add a layer of CSM and 8 oz all around and it will probably outlast the rest of the boat.

The reason the corner is soft is because water got in and its not a treated ply. So it just rots or the ply's separate.

Simple pressure treated ply will last a long time, and you can just glue the carpet right to it. Just let it dry a bit before cutting and fitting.

so just buy exterior plywood from my local home depot or lowes...then coat it very good with poly resin...let dry then glue some new carpet down.

should be pretty long lasting and GOOD ENOUGH with doing the above if I understand you correctly?

I'm just not UP on the sealing finish but sounds like poly resin with carpet over it should be ok.

I had in my basement some "helmsman minwax spar urethane clear high gloss sealer" here is a link thats shows and tells about it http://www.minwax.com/products/oil_based_clear_protective_finishes/helmsman_spar_urethane.html

would it be ok to use that or just buy some polyresin? the reason I ask is because I don't think lowes or home depot sells poly resin...I would have to order it or drive 2 1/2 hours to a west marine.

well better yet if I go buy some thompons' water seal waterproofer plus clear wood protector would that be pretty good? I'm just trying to avoid shipping and waiting etc...

You're kdiding about it being CDX right?

Ayuh,... Excuse Me,.... CDX, Exterior plywood....

The most common type of plywood, readily available at home centers. The glues used in exterior plywoods are much more resistant to moisture than interior plywoods. Once again, nearly all grades are available, with A-C, B-C and CDX the most common.

As for the bottom 3 pictures,....
The grain "Looks" like it's a lesser grade, aka: Construction Grade of solid Mahogany....
Of course, I can't see the side of the board to know whether it's a Solid piece or Plywood....
Either way, it appear to be Mahogany on the side I Can see...

As for the Finish,... It Appears to be just Varnish....

You can't paint or stain over Thompson's water seal besides that it's junk. Just use Hellman's Marine Spar Varnish or Poly and you will be fine. Make sure to hit the edges with a couple of good coats and let is soak in good before applying the next coat.

Stay away from HD or Lowe's lumber unless they have Fir in stock. Most often it's Ponderosa pine and it's really soft

our lowes carries poly resin and so does home depot. i'm pretty sure tractor supply carries it and any auto parts store should have it. or maybe even walmart in their auto section. if you make a few phone calls you should be at least able to find quarts of it locally somewhere. it's pretty standard stuff.

hmm ok seems like you two agree..so I'll take that advice.

I agree looks like just varnish as the finish to me...think I'll be ok with just thompson's water seal waterproofing finish?

the original sure lasted a long time...since 84 and still wasn't too bad. Ofcourse I only have a summer cabin on the lake and my boat has always been garaged.

So, helmans makes such a animal? because I like helmans it's always done great on my decking etc..

but you say they have a helmans MARINE spar varnish?? I didn't see that at lowes or home depot today. Just such I don't keep looking for it and them not making it you're such they make a "marine" spar varnish? If so I'll just saturate it with that.

because in 5-10 years I'll probably redo the flooring on the entire boat for the hell of it..it's an 1984!

We had it at the HD I worked at and I ran the Paint Department. Don't use Thompsons water seal. The only reason people buy it is because they have a great marketing program. The product is lousy. Do you remember the commercial that shows the water beading up? Your top coat will adhere just about as well and that's not what you want. If anything, paint it good with "Copper Green" first then Varnish it with a good exterior grade Polyurethane product. Marine Spar varnishes are made to withstand weather and sun and you don't have that problem. Still, if you can find it, use it because it should out last anything else.

Weider....two comments...
First, if you go exterior plywood...let it dry before applying any finishes. If it's fresh, it will be wet - like dimensional PT lumber.
Second, Thompsons will not hold up permanently. A sealer is a good idea, but you might investigate other options.

good read. I will be going to home depot tomorrow for that helmans marine spar varnish. I'm in the same boat as the OP, I just want something simple and temporary (a few years at least!)

Good luck finding it, not saying they don't make a MARINE spar urethane but I looked at their site online and also went to lowe's and home depot.

as far as the helmsman brand all they carry online and in the stores that suites our need is their "helmans minwax spar urethane" in gloss, semi-gloss & satin...I bought the satin.

lowe's also carried some other spars one even said MARINE use on it above the water line....the name brand was "cabot"

I bought the clear satin helmsman spar urethane...it might be the same as the marine one as mentioned not sure..I do know they don't make one that says marine spar...atleast it's not on their website or in your normal stores.

their websites are horrible, i can never find things there that I find in the stores. If I cant find it in the store I'll go with that other stuff or some kind of poly resin. I'll also be going to tractor supply too so..we'll see. I'll report back tomorrow after my adventure.

Any spar varnish will do well enough if you aren't placing it into direct sunlight. I don't see the need necessarily for a marine grade spar finish.

As far as the other board goes ( The dimensional lumber )...it looks like it could be white oak, but it's hard to tell since it's old and weathered and the picture is only big enough to get some of the detail of the grain. They make a test kit to tell for sure that it is or isn't white oak. I don't know why you'd want a heavy wood like that in there though in the first place, so based on the weight of the stuff, I'd say chances are it's something else.

Where in the boat did that come from anyway?
