Now that Nissan is offering full size trucks there's no reason anyone buying a truck shouldn't at least consider them.
On paper, they look like a great truck. Many people advise against buying a vehicle in it's first model year as there can be issues with design and construction. If I were in the market in a year or so I would consider one.

I just re-read the posts in this thread and ZodFutMk2 said it all..."In the end it came down to three simple points: 1) Caliber of the dealership; 2) The most bang for the buck; and 3) Whatever my wife said"...he's still driving a Honda Civic...what a hoot, ZodFutMk2 you're hilarious, and honest too!

When I went looking for my first truck my wife asked why, after 20 years, I wanted a truck. I replied "to pull my boat". And she said, "but you don't have a boat" I quickly replied, "yet". And that is when my mid-life crisis began...

The F-150's to 2003 had issue with ball joints and such. The newer f-150s so far are superior. The Tundra has a large turning circle so its hard to park. Th Dodge rear seat seems small and the transmissions are weak. The Chevy seems plain but works ok gets good milage too.

The Nissan Titan was introduced in late 2003 (2004 model year). They are now putting out the 2006 models. All "first year issues" have been resolved. I bought a 2004 model, and I'll admit there were some issues. But it's all been covered under warranty and I would have no trouble recommending the truck now.

Having been through it, I would agree that not buying the first year model is good advice, but that is no longer the case with these trucks.

I think the "caliber of the dealership" is overrated. Just as with a boat, if the quality's there to begin with, you won't be needing the dealer much after the sale. And what happens when (as I did) you leave the area? I paid extra for a dealer program that includes free rental cars when yours is in for service and a few extra benefits. Now that I'm nearly six hundred miles away from the dealership, that seems like a poor investment. And dealerships often change hands and "caliber" can easily go down.

BTW: I'm still waiting for that evidence of frame failure on Toyotas.

I would have gotten a Titan if I could afford it so I went with the Tundra instead. I would never buy brand new domestic vehicle again unless they get rid of the rebates and zero financing, etc...I bought a brand new Stratus R/T in 2003 for $26K, a year 15K miles later, it worth half of what I paid for and the car was still super sweet front to back. Tundra have box frame from the front to the rear of the cabin to better support the engine and tranny, C-frame from the cabin to the back to provide flex which allows for better ride, more load and towing capacity. Even with a more rigid frame(all box) F-150 have less load carrying capacity then the Tundra.
Take a Ram 1500 over a bump and it feel like the back end gonna fall off, there are many occurrences of the rear axle snapped when going over bump.
If you planning on keeping the truck for a long time and can afford it and don't want to hear any crap from your friend about buying a foreign truck. Get a fully loaded Silverado Z71, these seem to have been given special attention at the factory, it ride and handle way better then the regular Silverado.

I saw on TV today where GM and Ford sales are down while Toyota and Nissan sales are up.

To each his own - ask 10 guys which is the best truck and you'll get 11 diffrent answers. It's hard to say what is "foreign" and what is "domestic" anymore.

I bought American for the sake of buying American and I'll tell you that's the last time I don't buy what I believe to be the best product at the best price regardless of where it comes from. That was the only "new" vehicle I've ever bought and it was among the worst I've had when it comes to reliability and performance - including a series of $500.oo beaters I drove before I could afford a decent vehicle.

To buy American for the sake of it only encourages American companies to continue to produce substandard products. When they have to compete in the free market (one of the cornerstones of a free market economy) they have to offer a competetive product at a competetive price - period. Some say that the best thing to happen to American cars was competition from foreign manufacturers. This seems to be a logical statement to me and in the end the consumer benefits.

Either way I like my Nissans. A Nissan is definitely most likely to succeed either of my current trucks when the time comes - but I'll have a look at them all before I spend my money just the same. When it's no longer my opinion that Nissan is the best value I'll buy whatever is - and so should you, no matter who makes it or where.

I drove my 1st diesel dually while negotiating the "yet" with my wife. After 140,000 miles we finally purchased the boat!

Re: Opinions: Tundra, Silverado, F150, Dodge 1500

I went through the same exhaustive search just a few weeks ago. I started looking at the half ton range.
F-150 - Nice looks, Solid build quality, but fuel mileage is only good if you drive 50 on the highway with the A/C off.
GM 1500's - Strong engines, good ride, but the cheap plastic interior I couldn't get past.
Dodge 1500 - Nice looks, Good Power, horrible gas mileage.
Tundra - Nice looks, but the V8 is too small. If you want a truck that rides like a car, the Tundra is perfect. To me, it seemed like it was overall too delicate and would break if I ever tried to use it like a true truck.
Nissan - Fit and finish looked good, good power, but it priced itself out of the running. It may be good, but not that good. 2wd Titan cost more than equally equiped Ford 4x4.

Being a long time Ford person, I was ready to pull the trigger when my wife came out of the blue and broadsided me by saying, "why dont you just get a truck that can do what you need and forget about the costs... :) Having to act fast, before the tides turned, I switched to the HD truck market. Long story short, I have an 06 Dodge 3500, Quad Cab, Cummins Turbo Diesel, 6 speed, 4x4 Dually on order :D Yes it was slightly more money, but she said it was worth every penny not to hear me complain about what I "should" have gotten.

Nav

Navigator,
Nice truck! We had a '99 version of the same thing --- it was so loud that we would stop on long trips "just to let the noise out of the cab". Our 05 (same configuration but auto) is soooooooooo much quiter.

Now that's what I'm talking about! When I "bought American" I bought what was probably my 5th or 6th Chevy, only this one was brand new. 18 times in the shop in less than 12 months and I was ready for a change. Might have stuck it out had they treated me right about it (3 different dealerships). When I complained, their response was "it's under warranty - what are you complaining about?" Traded it straight up for my first Nissan and never looked back.

My "domestic or die" friends point out that parts for their vehicles are more readily available and at a cheaper price than those for my Nissan. Hasn't been a problem - I don't need replacement parts nearly as often as I used to since switching to Nissan. The only down side is that I don't know my truck inside and out like I did my domestics - That's what happens when you aren't wrenching on them all of the time.

I'll take that trade-off any day.

Re: Opinions: Tundra, Silverado, F150, Dodge 1500

When I went a shoppin for my four wheel drive crew cab, it was for three things ... Comfort, Power, Price, in that order

Titan ... felt too tight inside, no room ... nice power at launch but fell off as speed increased Dealer didnt want to bargain at all (just cuz price is last doesnt mean its not important!)

Dodge ... Hemi, God what a rocket! Suspension noises bothered me tho, it just didnt feel like it was all moving as one solid unit, and braking feel was odd, no brake no brake STANDING ON ITS NOSE, like flipping a hair trigger Gave a decent discount, but was insulting on the trade in

Ford ... cheap feeling inside, no room, lots of tire noise intrusion. Good torque from the 5.4 motor, but no hemi

GMC ... Had my color combination but didnt have power seat, which made it less desirable than I would have liked, but the test ride sold me, lots of room, comfortable supportive seat (not a skimpy feeling thing like ford and dodge) plenty of head, leg and belly room. Hit the gas and a liquid surge of torque, nice bass note (read: rummmble, but subtle), roll the windows up and all noise stops. Has auto four wheel drive AND the option of locking down low four or high four ... and two wheel drive of course.
Dealer actually dealed, and brought the price down from 36.9k to 29.2 AND gave a solid price on the trade in - not bad at all for a relatively loaded (Z-71 offroad package, with trans and oil coolers, skidplates, tilt cruse tint satellite alloys bigger tires

8000 miles later I have two complaints, I dont think the auto climate control turns the compressor off, and the thing is a tad TOO quiet with the windows up and the satellite radio on ... wayyyyy too easy to wind up rolling at 90 or so (and Barney Fife dont want to hear bout it bein new to me and all)

If you like the silly azzed Transformers Robot front end, the Chevy Silverado is a carbon copy of the much more sophisticated (read: CLASS ACT) GMC Sierra (except the 04 silverado had a floor mounted transfer case shift, no auto option, but GM is trying to position the GMC between chevy and cadillac, so its not surprising there are a few perks and a dose of panache)

oh yeah, AC on and a steady 60 she gets 23.8 MPG (Mobil One is helping!)

If I could only stop making the corvette derived 327 engine sing those lovely songs of half throttle basso profundo!!!! MAN that drops the avg like a lead balloon!!!

:D :D :D :D :D

PS - granted, ive only towed Hydrophobia II (which is, you guessed it, Tin Boat Two) maybe a dozen times, but one crabbin "spot" was promised to be a great spot but tricky to launch ... tricky cause you had to back into the creek to get r done!(down a steep hill into a swampy area, two wheelers need not apply!) with the Z 71 package locking differentials are included, and with mud sucking at the axles of Hydro IIs trailer, the Sierra (itself on muddy pebbly ground) powered out with nary a slip of any wheel

For what ya get, cant beat the GMC

but if money is REALLY no problem, there is always the lovely and luxurious Lexus 470

now THAT is a tow rig!

I have a 96 nissan extended cab pickup, that i use for everything...work, towing. It has 160,000 hard miles on it,it looks and runs perfect. The only thing that has ever broke on it was the fuel pump sending unit. it gets 22mpg and is an easy truck to maintain. at 46 years old ,i have had every american truck and have come to this conclusion...that after 100,000 miles you should be prepared to start dumping money into them.It is not that they dont last 200,000m but how much money to get them to that point.
I will be looking for a new truck for next year...i will stick with a nissan or toyota.
