i think you have the right perspective on things. and i can't speak for everyone, but i'd rather see on the water pics, especially with fish, than more pics of paint stripping in progress

(which is not a complain about them stripping pix.....)

Nice pictures and story Rusty, I guess that's why we live here.
I try hang at Dent Island (Bute Inlet) a couple of time a year.
Big lings up that way.

Hey GLG, good to hear from you. I think I might of seen you coming into Comox Harbour last week with your uncle's boat. Did you stop outside the green can buoy and check a crab pot? I was walking on the Royston Beach enjoying the low tide spectacle.
There was a DFO fella sitting in his truck observing the waterfront, talking to dispatch, and checking out his laptop. I didn't see anyone committing any infraction though, so maybe he was just keeping an eye on things.

Yeah, fishing was good on the weekend and the trip was to unwind from a big family visit...wheww. I have only been up Bute Inlet once and that was in the late Fall. There was ice up in the head of the inlet that we broke through with the tugboat, delivering and picking up logging equipment. Sounds like an adventure though and there is a resort up near the head of the inlet too, just in case a person needs some help or whatever.

Wow, GLG, Dent Island... that area I have been through several times, pretty incredible tides there, and that is where the fella was thrown overboard a couple of years ago from the tide jarring the boat and drown...be careful up that way, Bud. Last time I was up there, 2 tugs bringing a log boom through the pass were late on the tide change they didn't make it and wound up wrapped around the island instead:facepalm:

After kicking around names for the boat we decided on one, then played with variations of how to spell it. My Gal got a friend to print it up 3 times as it didn't come out the way I liked it to look. Not real happy with the final result, but the SS deserved a name so....

what do you fellas think? Probably close to 35-40% of our diet comes out of the ocean so we thought that it fit the boat:)

Great pics!
I used to catch a few lings when I was fishing up and down the SoCal coast. They are about the ugliest things out there and the blue alien fillets are freaky! lol

Love the name too..It seems to fit

Thanks for the compliments Kev...yeah the lings are pretty ugly alright, but they are good eating though.

I just checked your avatar and your now on the other side of the continent...from SoCal to Florida? big move but at least your still in the sunshine!!

When I was installing the wiring, the local marine store wanted too much money for a waterproof electric main fuse panel...so I made one. I used a water proof small tackle box that my gal got me for a present. I mounted it under the steering wheel console and drilled holes in the bottom for attachment of the wires to the electrical bar.Yes it is simple, functional, and effective.

Re: Our recent purchase of SS 16 ft Starcraft

I attached all the wire leads with quick disconnect couplers to remove my electrical devices from the boat due to theft and water corrosion. These wire leads will need to be changed periodically as the marine air is saturated with salt and tends to corrode the connectors. But this modification turned out good and there has been no problems to-date.:)

Edit: I carry spare fuses in the box too

Would di-electric grease help minimize the corrosion when the connectors are pulled apart & left open air? Lightly applied just after disconnecting the devices....

In/under your waterproof box, the grease might not attract dirt & debris like it would under the hood of a car if/when the connectors were seperated. In automotive spark plug boot connectors is the only place I've ever used it. But to some degree it's still corrosion fighting silicone grease, correct?

A quick google search indicates it's also great for bulb bases & other electrical connections, ESP in marine (salt air/water) applications:D

Re: Our recent purchase of SS 16 ft Starcraft

Well I have been spending considerable time looking for a kicker, that included bringing tools, gas, tank, water hose, gas line hose, and at one point even a garbage can to check out various outboards. I looked at a 80s, 6 hp evinrude for $300, a 80s, 8 hp Mariner for $500, a 80s 10 hp Honda 4 stroke $450, and a 80s 9.9 Johnson for $500.

The 6 hp evinrude had seen too much saltwater corrosion already and the 8hp mariner needed too many parts to warrant the asking price. The honda 10 hp started good, but then back fired through the carb, developed a miss and the owner refused to reduce the price.

Lastly, the 9.9 hp Johnson started fine, had some wear and tear on it, and we decided to buy it for $450 that the owner agreed to.

Re: Our recent purchase of SS 16 ft Starcraft

I had already picked up a outboard bracket on CL for $30, so I temporarily clamped it in place, mounted the 9.9 Johnson and tried it out. The location seems to work well and drops plenty low enough to avoid cavitation. Bolted the bracket in place with some Sikoflex silicone to waterproof the holes.
I gave the outboard a good cleaning, changed the leg oil, lubricated it with grease, installed a new hose clamp on the fuel line oinnector as it was sucking air, and let it run in a barrel of water for an hour or so. The Johnie runs great so far and I can't wait to try it out.

Ya your right, I was just thinking that I might have forgot to coat the connectors with some protection. I used to spray the electrical panel with a waxy coating that is now discontinued. I need to find something like it as well.

Overall, the price does seem reasonable, EZ, most guys won't go any lower than the $500 mark, but there were lots above that right up to full retail price on a 6 year old outboard. I was going to email the guy a link to prove that I could buy a new outboard for the same price with a 3 year warranty that he was asking for his 6 year outboard.

Hey Rusty, great deal on the Johnny, and nice job mounting it up. Princess auto sells Dilectric grease real cheap, I use it on the trailer connector and connections under the hood to stop corrosion.

Nice find on the motor. I've got a '89 15hp Johnson and love it. The 9.9 should push yours well.

I could use a kicker like that too. Sweet deal.

I'm envious of your fishing/camping setup. Those bays and fishing spots look great. I might message you sometime as I may head your way. The fishing looks too good to pass up.

That was some heavy water man. Good to know that the boat could handle it if pushed with a good captain. I'm too chicken to brave that stuff.

Re: Our recent purchase of SS 16 ft Starcraft

Thanks guys,

Thanks Glen I'll look into getting those connectors protected.

Hey Jim, a kicker is prudent in these parts as we can into areas where help is not close at hand and I have needed a back up outboard to get to the nearest port/harbour. As for the rain, it is sunny today with rain tonight and showers tomorrow...

B2, it is good to hear that these little kicker are economical on fuel. From my research on-line, it seems like the models from 74 to mid 90s have a lot of interchangable parts.:)

TR...I think these 9.9 and 15 hp are the same engines, just that the 9.9 have different carbs, reeds valves, and exhaust tubes. Weight wise they are the same, I'm curious what kind of bracket you have yours mounted on? Mine is made in Vancouver, BC by Spar Marine.
