Out drive, water impeller question.

Re: Out drive, water impeller question.

Up date; out drive in place, though the shifter did jam, had to loosen and put on slower.
When I cranked up, the water came up through the impeller, inside to the 3/4 inch water hose before the regulator as it should have.
So I now know the problemis at or above the regulator.
Plan; bypass the regulator with one hose, loosen the hx plate at the front end. Give her a crank up and see if sea water (hose) drains from it. If it does then I must not have found the problem.
I now know water is coming to the HX, so tomorrow with the new hose, water should flow out of the exhaust, and near the transom area ( I believe). If this all works then guess I no longer have a problem!
Will run her a while on the hose and see if the engine stays at a low temp. I don't think it should get to greater than 175 Deg. F.?

I certainly appreciate all of your input particularly Drew's help!

Still trying to analyse why she ran hot in the beginning. The water impeller was all intact but but worn.

Could the thermostat in the closed system be stuck closed? If it is closed, does the fresh water not cerculate back out of the exhaust? Na I don't thinks so, it should circulate with the thermostat closed. The thermostat only opens when the antifreeze warms up enough to allow the antifreeze to circulate through the heat EX, right??

Re: Out drive, water impeller question.

The water should circulate through the cooling water system regardless of what the thermostat is doing no? Since the pump for cooling water is mechanically and not electrically driven at all? Not sure about this, since the coolant pump on the closed coolant side is mechanically driven as well. Hmmm....not sure.

Glad you are getting closer Glenn. I'm "stuck out of the water" right now, as I am waiting on parts to replace all of my transom seals, as well as my cooling water transfer tube through the bell housing. Won't get them till Monday unfortunately.

Drew you have plenty to look forward to do.
What direction should the trim tab be pointing to, r or left? It makes a lot of difference regarding assisting the boat to move strait ahead at cruise. Mine is also a diode for corrosion.
I actually looking forward to at least one more time out before winter storage.

Sloped side of trim tab is on transom side, "vertical" edge is away from the boat.

I hope to get my boat done and out for the FIRST time of the year before storage. I didn't decide to work on it this Fall until mid-August. In early Agust my 8 year old son saw some boats on the Allegheny river in Pittsburgh and was interested and when I told him we had a boat he looked at me like I was lying to him. I told him I would go get it and work on it to get it on the water. Didn't anticipate so much work, but at least we can take it out till the end of Oct and then have it ready for next spring to do some serious boating.

Sounds like it may be a cool ride but you have lots of fun and work ahead. Wishing you luck with it all.

Regarding the above, the trim tab, I was thinking what direction it should turn, front turned to the right or more toward the left. It helps keep the boat from pulling, sorta like the front end of a car alignment. It can turn either direction just a little prior to tighting it down.
You have one son at this point?

I was thinking what direction it should turn,
i'd just put it straight, then adj. as necessary.. ya adj. it for no steering pull. this is set for one speed, one load, one trim condition. you'll still get pull when other conditions are present.

Re: Out drive, water impeller question.

I usualy drive the boat, if it leans and or pulls I stop, change the pitch right there then try it again. Usualy cruise speed is what I want to be level and not pulling, of course the trim of the outdrive for the correct plane does most of that.
Update my ordeal; put the new hose on today, bypassed the old regulator, water pumped right into the hx, I tighted the end cap and ran her for a spell. Engine warmed up nicely, the hoses all warmed up when the thermostat opened. (excluding the pickup hose). Temps got up to around 150 F. Very happy, must have been the themostat blocking the pickup hose.
Thanks again to you all. This site is a great resourse and everyone that participates on it are Great!
