Outdrive Dolly

I just finished my outdrive dolly that I made from a modified Harbor Freight Motorcycle jack that was on sale this week for $69. The modification is to install a sliding outdrive holder on top of the jack pads. The slides are 220lb heavy duty drawer slides from Rockler ($20). This way I roll the jack near the transom and adjust the height and side-to-side to line up with the bellhousing, and then slide the outdrive forward until everything is hooked up properly and bolt it on.

Since my boat is on stands on a gravel surface, it would be somewhat difficult to push the whole jack forward smoothly and not have it hang up on pieces of gravel or move sideways, especially since the jack wheels are rather small. That's why I decided to make a separate sliding table on top of the jack. It slides forward 20", and even with the outdrive all the way forward it doesn't tip the jack.

Below are two pictures, one with the slide retracted, one with the slide extended fully.

Nice Outdrive stand 62cruiserinc :hail:

I am wondering when the outdrive is slid forward if that makes the balance of the jack stand close to tipping forward. I've been thinking about something like that for my Bravo 3's . . . since I'm not getting any younger, the outdrives seem to be getting heavier every year.

Nice mod.

Nice to see you here SB :thumb: :joyous:

Nice job! I used the same HF motorcycle jack for mine (same sale a year ago) , but yours is nicer. The slide-out arm is a neat idea. I removed the saddle and replaced it with a 'box' cut out on top for the outdrive. I used all the stock hardware, and can turn it back into a motorcycle jack in about 10 minutes.

My alpha drive isn't on the edge of tipping forward, but I tested it by pushing down on the outdrive when it was extended. I think if the drive was another 25lbs heavier it would be close to tipping.

I just took the rubber pads off the two saddles and bolted cut-down 4x4s to existing holes in the metal. So I can put it back to a stock jack quickly. However, I did cut out a horizontal brace between the front two lifting bars that attach to the saddles. I did this so the slides could be retracted back far enough. Otherwise the drive hit the horizontal brace and the slides stopped about 8 inches short of fully retracting. I wanted the drive to stay within the footprint of the jack when the slides were retracted because I plan on storing it at home on the dolly for the winter and didn't want to take up any extra floor space.

Here's what mine looks like from the top. like I said- simple. I've since cut a hole toward the back of the shelf so I can remove the big round anode and get at the rear bolt under it. That was a dumb oversight on my part. I also use it to store one drive over the winter. The other I just wheel to the back of the garage and lean it against the wall. One of these days I'll make a fixed stand for it.

Anyway, I think you did a really nce job on yours. Makes life just a little easier, doesn't it.
