Got it all back together and started it up.on the hose.Ran awesome in neutral.

Is it OK to shift into gear while on the hose? I never do that as I was afraid it would mess something up.

I have just read through this thread with great interest. Glad you had good service from SEI. My reason for posting is a word of caution about shifting the outdrive into gear while on land/on the hose. . . If the propeller is on the outdrive, be aware of the dangers to people (especially children) and pets that may be in the area.

If the propeller is off, then a much safer scenario.

You going to give it a water test before winter sets in?

I would love to get it in the water at least on more time. I started it again with the propeller on and shifted it into gear.
I will try again without the prop on as I didn't like what I heard.

It shifted into forward without a glitch. I shifted back into neutral without a problem. I then shifted to reverse and went to look over to back of the boat and it seemed to be "clacking / ticking" from the drive. Shifted back to neutral and the clacking stopped. Shifted back to forward and same thing, clacking. I can actually feel it if I put my hand on the top of the drive. there is no noise in neutral.

It's hard to tell where the noise is coming from as the noise from the motor running dulls the noise.

I'm afraid it isn't quite fixed. They replaced the clutch, seals and rings in the lower unit. They said the clutch failed.

They also replaced the Universal joint in the upper unit.

I never noticed any noise such as this before, although, I wasn't listening as I am now.

The clacking /ticking noise kind of sounds as if the prop was just barely hitting something, which it isn't. It is barely audible but there.

Does this sound like an issue??? I can send the drive back again if needed.

That noise is normally the shift cable is not adjusted correctly. It is not moving far enough to fully engage

I think the Alpha is a 2 cable system like the OMC Cobra. So not only do you have to adjust the lower cable that goes from the engine shifter bell crank to the out drive, but you also have to check the adjustment of the cable that goes from your remote control to the shifter bell crank. You need to have equal throw in both fwd and rev. Sounds like you're not getting enough travel in rev.

I am getting the noise in both forward and reverse. I am going out now to try and reset the shift cable. Will be back in a while, hopefully with good news

Unfortunately, I have not had any time to get at this issue. I was able to get a good look yesterday afternoon and Sunday afternoon. I adjusted the cables, both drive and remote and after about 6 or 7 tries, I just can't seem to get the adjustment correct. I have done this before without a problem.

I followed the instructions from the Mercruiser service manual #6, and, it doesn't want to adjust properly. Every time I shift into reverse, the roller creeps up the shift cutout switch lever and doesn't go back to the middle.

I haven't tried to start her up yet as I want to be certain the cables are adjusted right. The shift cable is 5 years old and it doesn't appear to be kinked at all. Should I try and move the
adjustable stud on shift lever to get the roller centered?

Could it be a cable issue?

Thanks for the helpful video. I will be trying that tomorrow when the rain stops. I have done everything in the video except move the adjustable stud.

Let's hope this works.

was able to get a few minutes to adjust the shift cable today. I followed the instructions 100% and the roller still wouldn't center. In reverse, the roller was way off. If I moved the adjustable stud, it made it worse. I started all over again and same result. What I did at this point was I turned the barrel in one turn and tried again. This didn't work, so, I turned it in 2 times and everything lined up. I started it up, let it warm up and shifted into gear, forward and reverse several times and the "clacking" is gone.

I know everything I read says NOT to move the barrel once adjusted, but to move the adjustable stud. When I moved the stud, it made it worse.
I am hoping the weather will allow me to get in the water by the end of next week, Moving the barrel won't cause any issues will it?

Also, how cold does it have to get to freeze the block or drive? It will be down into the high 20's this upcoming week/

TL;DR.... but if it works and is fully engaging, leave it...

It's certainly possible high 20's could freeze the block.
Don't have to worry about the drive.

I tried again today and it seems to be fine, so, I'll leave it. Hope to get it in the water after Thanksgiving, weather permitting
