Ok just to refresh everybodies memory 1983 I-R gimble housing, gimble ring and bell housing brand new SEI outdrive. no need to worry about if it's the right replacement. i hooked the cables up and i have a problem i think i know the answer i just want to read responces first. i sat outside today trying to adjust the cables, what is happening i would adjust the cables in forward everything works good it locks CW and then there is small clicking CCW the clicking wasn't extreme i think it's normal like i have read in other threads, so to move on i shift into neutral prop spin both ways very easy but when i shift into reverse it seems like it's to much into reverse it would lock CCW like it's suppose to, but when i spun it CW and it was clicking very loud and hard to spin, so then i adjusted the cable now in reverse i would get it to work good and worked good in nuetral but in forward it locked CW but CCW it would click very loudly and hard to spin ( i should mention i could spin it but not easly). i should mention it was just as hard to adjust in nuetral also. so my probelm reversed it's self
OK i hope you guys understand that one WHEW!. my question is did i not bungie crod the prop good enough in forward and it move when i joind the upper and lower and do i need to drop the lower and move one thooth
P.S. when i ajUsted the cables i did WOT

Re: outdrive question

Out of the water. Disconnect the remote cable.

Prop locked in forward (CCW) with a "bungee" cord! Intermediate cable barrel 6" center to center of the pivots. Adjust the remote cable accordingly.

Re: outdrive question

..., but when i spun it CW and it was clicking very loud and hard to spin, ...

THAT is exactly what you WANT... That means it is FULLY engaged in gear... If you only have light clicking and a lot of easy movement it means only the edges of the dogs are catching, and you run the risk of shearing them off....

Oh, and BTW, I NEVER use a bungy cord... :D :D
I'll be putting my drive back on tomorrow evening, so I'll do a video of it and post it up.... It really easy, and no bungy cord BS!!...
Here's the one I did of removal -> http://youtu.be/w3O63YTOhn8

Re: outdrive question

Get the shift cables adjusted correctly, then work on the the throttle cable. If there is throttle movement before the shift cable finishes moving, then you may be looking at a control box problem (usually wear)....

Re: outdrive question

there is only one shift cable and the throttle cable at the assit switch or interrupter switch the cables worked fine before engine rebuild so i'm confident that's not the problem it's the guy putting it back togther. i found a web site that explains how to adjust the interrupter switch i'm going to give it a try. i wish there was a video showing how to do it on a 470

Re: outdrive question

There is no difference between do it on a 470 as any other engine. That link text is quite confusing and difficult to follow, even for me and I've done this adjust 100s of times. Best to go back to the GENUINE manual and follow that...

The should be 3 cables running to the engine. 1 from the drive, the 'lower shift cable' and 2 from the control box, a throttle cable and a remote shift cable. The throttle cable should connect directly to the carburettor and 2 shift cables to the shift plate. The lower shift cable should be in the lower slot. Get the lower shift cable adjustments done FIRST, then the remote shift cable, then the throttle cable...

Just one quick question.... You've just done an engine rebuild... You didn't crush the lower shift cable when you put the engine back in did you?

no i did not the cable is fine every thing moves very smoothly and no kinks and yes your 3 cable info is correct to my motor two from the control one goes to carb the other to shift plate and the third from outdrive to shift plate
i have only been adjusting the remote cable and the lower cable i have not touched the throttle cable i will try again tomorrow with the new info on which cable to adjust first then second then third i'm understanding a little more with your help and that web site i been looking at

Re: outdrive question

Nice videos Chris. You explanined everything in detail where people on here have issues.
Should help out many! :)

That was the main reason for doing them. I had to pull the engine out anyway so thought I'd do some instructional videos at the same time. Just a bit more difficult when you have to do it all on a tripod... :D (the camera, not me...)

Thanks for the feedback...

yes watching your videos it put my mind at rest that i installed the outdrive correctly and aligned the motor correctly
like i said before you should all so make a video on the cable adjustments . the reason i'm saying this i looked for some videos on this there wasn't much that helped so maybe down the road you might do this. that being said i'm on my way to tackle the cables again this morning
THANKS

Re: outdrive question

Chris - nice video. The only thing I would note that makes the job a little easier - especially for the first timer or someone who doesn't do it as often - is the installation tool that holds the shift slide in place during installation.

I didn't use it for years - and on a whim purchased the tool. (They are only a dollar or two). I LOVE it! It keeps the slide from moving around and makes one less thing to worry about lining up as you slide everything back in place. It removes easily once you get it up in place - it is the orange tool pictured here.

Re: outdrive question

Hey Mark,

I've seen those tools in the manual, but never felt the need for it... For people who don't do them all that often, sure it would make it a bit easier... I don't own one so I couldn't use it on the video... :D
