Also, when used with the proper sarcastic tone it means "Were you born stupid or did you have to work at it?".

I always use a torque wrench, especially for something like this where you have an aluminum casting.

The fact that the torque specs had to be asked also means there is no service manual being used here.

No, I am using a service manual... that and I took the thing off and am doing a reverse order to put it back on. Didn't realize I needed to read instructions that go something like this:

1.) Pick up outdrive
2.) stick shaft into hole
3.) continue pushing outdrive on.

I know the shift cable has to line up, i know the coupler has to be lined... what else do you need? Id rather get a quick answer to a torque spec than search throug hundreds of pages.

Ok anyway,

Outdrive still wont go on. :(

The two o-rings on the input shaft can be a bear to slide into place when installing the outdrive. It sounds like they're what're holding you up, if you have everything else right.

Can you reach the place where the coupler & the input shaft meet?....
Is it lining up?.....
Sometimes it is necessary to turn the prop ccw ( & the gears inside, takes some force)to get the splines to engage......
Torque the bolts to 50#.......:)

splines are engaged... thats not the problem here ( i dont think ). At the point that its at right now, if i hand crank the motor (and the boat is in FWD) the prop shaft moves. So its definitey into the motor, just wont go all the way on. :(

I know it has been asked a few times in this thread but did you check the alignment?

Exactly what manual do you have. And I sure hope you don't say Clymers or Seloc

Re: Outdrive wont go all the way back on

had this issue on my volvo , i wiggled, pushed, turned the prop, etc and got it within 1/8 of an inch just not flush, at that point i put a few of the nuts on the stud, used the hand wrench, and started tightening, i used VERY little pressure and the nuts pulled the drive back on the rest of the way with VERY little effort. btw if your within an inch of so, the splines should be engaged already, if not you would not of gotten the drive on that far. its not like the splines only go in 1 inch if ya know what i mean. i stress however, only do this if you use very little turning force, if you need to put some muscle into it, STOP, something is not lined up right or not aligned. i do not recomend doing this if your more than 1" out at the most, in fact, i'd say be within 1/4 inch. this is what i've done and been fine. alignment is KEY

Yeah I know the splines are engaged, because when I hand crank the motor my propeller shaft spins. Its within literally |-----| that far from being flush. It seems like the top 4 bolts want to go on, but then the bottom two have something catching on them. I dont know what would be restricting it though, because theres nothing blocking anything. I am able to get the bolts on a bit though, should I try cranking them down a bit and just not use too much effort? Go in a nice cross pattern as to make sure everything is even?

Ayuh,............

And Sometimes it just takes 1 of those Old Fashion Mule Kicks to Get'r Done..........
It Helps those O-rings thru,.... As long as the Alignment is Right......

If everything is lined up, do the above.

Note, you will have to leave your computer and go to the boat to do this. This has been going on for 3 weeks now.

I realize I need to leave the computer, it just so happens that after my first attempt I got busy with other things. In the past 3 weeks I've been trying to finish my senior year in college, so this isn't really high on the priority list. On top of that we got about a week's worth of rain, and Im not lucky enough to have the boat sitting in a climate controlled garage, or any garage for that matter. I figured I'd bring up my old thread instead of starting a new one as well, but maybe I was wrong.

Well, got it back on. Just put the nuts on and slowly tightened them. They didnt give me much resistense so it just slid right on. Now to adjust the shift cable since I changed out the lower cable.

im glad that worked out for ya, just want to re-iterate, very little to no resistance is good. any sort of resistance is bad. using this meathod i think is slightly better than donkey kickin it :)

That shows the difference between your thought processes and experience of installing lots of drives. If those orings are tight because of groove depth, or too little lube, or whatever, some of them are just hard to get past the orings. If you can figure a way to do it gently, with no resistance and still use the orings, by all means let the rest of us know. Don't just spout off things that are impossible to do.
