I had oil on the o-rings the whole time, it just wouldnt go. Didnt take hardly any effort just tightening the nuts the last 1/2" or so.

That shows the difference between your thought processes and experience of installing lots of drives. If those orings are tight because of groove depth, or too little lube, or whatever, some of them are just hard to get past the orings. If you can figure a way to do it gently, with no resistance and still use the orings, by all means let the rest of us know. Don't just spout off things that are impossible to do.

when i have pulled my drive i've always replaced the o-rings no matter what with new ones, and then lubed them up real good with motor oil. i also lube the splines with moly lube. no matter what i've done it goes on within 1/8 inch or less of mating but not quite, and simply using little to almost no force on the nuts easily drew the drive back on. what i think, THINK is good about this is that you are using a more "square" and "equal" force pushing the o-rings in rather than the wiggle, push and shove method. But from your post you seem to think this is a bad way of doing it , again , only if your within a hair of mated the drive and pivot housing, NOT if your out fartther than that.

I think what Don is saying 4winns, is about your statement of "any resistance at all is bad". And he's saying there is always SOME resistance because of the o-rings, unless you've figured out a way around them. He is not putting down drawing the outdrive on the last 1/4 inch or so with the mounting bolts. Unless I'm misunderstanding him as well.

Bondo... I saw the same problem somewhere else on this forum and suggested the following: Use the free alignment tool that is right there - and the most accurate one - the outdrive yolk. Five minutes to press out the bearings, line up the engine (however long that would take, depending on how far off the current alignment is) and another ten to reassemble the yolk unless you have dropped a needle bearing somewhere (use a wad of grease).

Why you would take apart a perfectly good u-joint and then put it back together just to check alignment is beyond me. Especially when you can buy an alignment bar for $50 that will work better than the yoke.

Because it is easy to do, takes less time than going into town, saves $50 and I dislike buying something if I intend to use it only once. I am not a wealthy guy like you fellows....

I suspect you are right that, if it came off the engine easily and the engine was not played with, it is not a case of misalignment anyhow.....

Hey, why stop there, save yourself 30 bucks, DONT change the oil, leave that gear lube in the drive, theres another 30 bucks, spark plugs, who needs them? let those stockers continue to add fire to the mix, and gas??? PHHSSTT who needs gas, just take a wizz into your tank, because thats what your essentially doing by not doing maintenence on your boat. And look at it this way, all that money you save by not doing maintenence on your boat can go towards that new complete, engine and drive you will need to buy......

Even more reason not to take the yoke apart. If it ain't broke don't fix it comes to mind. Even if the bar was $300, I would be taking yokes apart if I didn't have to.

Sure could be out of alignment! I pulled off a drive easily once and the alignment was WAY off.
