FWIW, here is a picture (for demonstration purposes only of course-yes I am aware that two of the adults don't have lifejackets on) of the 12' (same 5' 2" beam) version of the boat I'm building:

Also, I've decided to go with the 16' instead. It doesn't cost that much more to build, but is obviously roomier and will carry an additional 150 lbs. Designer confirms that when loaded with the weight I had listed the boat will draft 5" and operate safely as designed with approximately 17" of freeboard. If anyone wants to comment on the safety equipment (things that are missing/should be changed/upgraded/etc...) please let me know. Hoping to start the build by the end of summer and work on the boat through the fall and winter for an early Spring launch. Here is a picture of the 16':
