It's an 1984 mercruiser 140 IO, If I leave it outside with the OD off will moisture or snow damage the bearing? Seems to me if I grease the bearing it would keep out moisture.

Why don't you just cover it up the hole so water can't get in there. A trash bag and some tape comes to mind. Be creative.

i don't know what damage it'll do. but myself. i don't want it snowing inside my bellhouseing. also didn't want rodents getting in that way.. so here was my 1st answer. this was how it sat for winter 07

if ya want, i think i can go find a link to a company that makes a $30 plastic cover similar to the one in the 2nd and 3rd pics..... that i hope will keep the snow and the mice out...
i used plexiglass for my cover. i coulda used wood too...

this is a similar thread as yours i did a month or so ago..... http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=283064

If you don't have ziggy's engineering skills, and you don't want a plastic bag, or a piece of cardboard, you can find an actual gasketed cover for storage. I think either boatfix or Overton's is where I got mine. Under $30.

Thanks for the replies; I'll probably just go the plastic bag route, once the leaks are fixed on the OD it will stay on the following years. I just wasn't sure it was a issue. Better to be safe then sorry I quess.

" Futzing " Don I haven't heard that expression in years, I like it.

i needed to service my drive like you, last year. 1st time i'd left the drive off for the winter.. the plastic garbage bags worked fine really. just not quite as mouse proof as the cover. which was my goal. anyways. i wondered how i'd feel about removing it this year and storing it inside. well, since ya gotta take it off year end anyways. it feels like not to bad of idea to just store it inside again. i've deferred maint. to the lower for lack of funds too. it'll get done over the winter. it's also not gonna get stolen. it is really easy to take them off. 5-10 min. and it could be gone.... i see benefits from inside storage myself...
you'll have to decide how ya feel about it when the time comes.....
heres the cover ya can buy... pdf... blow it up to see it better... http://www.boatfix.com/catalog/327.pdf

It is hard to steal something that's not there, I didn't think of that. I figure I have 6 months to find my oil leak and fix it this way. It will likely take that long as I'm new to the Mercruiser world. For the past 20 years I've owned and worked on a OMC stringer. At least the parts will be cheaper!
