Re: Over my head ?

most of us have sat looking at a big project and the more we sit and look the worse it gets. firstly dont look at this as restoring a boat this is a bunch of little projects that can be done one at a time and you end up with a restored boat. so item one is to remove the motor with lots of pics and measure anything that might be broken. once step one is over and you can pat yourself on the back and crack open a cold one. the tear out is real easy i used a chisel and aimed about 1/8th up the stringers and around the floor as it was something i could do in my own time at my own pace and i didnt have to wear anything other than a dust mask and sun glasses. funny that during the tear out you will be more upset to find good wood then the rotten stuff as it requires less effort to remove it. nothing like washing a transom out with a hose pipe instead of having to beat it to death. another way to look at it is ......... its broke it wont get any worse and it wont be worth any more or less no matter what you do to it and the first 20 steps dont cost anything other than labor so what have you got to loose.

Take it one day at a time. Look up Friscoboater, he has a ton of info on his Searay. Some how to videos and lots of pictures. This is a learning process and you will learn a lot. It seems like a lot of work, but I promise, the end result will be very satisfying and worth it. Plus you will have a boat that will outlast you. Good luck.

I've just been updating my own thread.
Feeling like you got in over your head... ?
Look what I managed to do by myself with a couple of come-alongs and a bunch of borrowed equipment.

Just don't set any big deadlines to get the work done. Nothings worse than watching that date come and go, and not being even close to where you thought you would be. I fully expected to be on the water 2 months ago.... Rather depressing that I wasnt, and a nasty cycle that I can't put as much money into the boat as I'd like, and pay rent, but the longer it takes me to work on the boat before I can move onto it for the summer, the more money I have to spend on rent.

Re: Over my head ?

I appreciate the support! I went out last night and sat in the boat for a while..... decided to poke the transom with a pry bar, that was a mistake. The transom is gone! This has turned into a all are nothing project. I'm going to take a few days to think it over. I have a pretty big "honey-do-list" so if I do return to the boat, it may be a month or so.

Sorry about your bad news.

Basically it comes to this..You will spend more $ to restore this than its worth.

After that fact is time. If you have the time and place and money we can get you through this.

If not..then ditch it sell it for what you can and move on.

As one of the other posters said .. look at it like multiple projects and not one big one. You Will fail here and there only to redo this and that ( part and parsel to restorations ;) ). However let nothing get you down man. Nothing.

Expectations lead to disapointments here in the resto of boats :) .. just keep on keeping on IF you want to start it.

Take your mind off the thing for a week. Dont even think about her. Them come back with an open mind and take a Good look. Do you want to do her..or not. ( It will be a full blown resto IMO ).

Good luck man.

That's not surprising. Normally if your deck and stringers are gone, the transom will be as well. It can all be repaired and rebuilt.
