I have a 1988 force 125 model # 1251A8C that according to the voltage guage is overcharging. At idle it reads 12.5 volts. When you give it throttle it steadly climbs to 15 - 16 volts by 4500 rpm's. Changed the rectifier on advice from local dealer. Still overcharging. I have checked the guage and it is working. Dealer suggested I load test the battery for a dead cell. I thought if the battery had a dead cell it would read under 12 volts not over. I will test the battery tonight. I thought the voltage regulator was bad. I don't know if it is in the rectifier on this model or a componet of the Stator. Any help would be appreciated on what is wrong.

Re: Overcharging Force 125

Paul,

I have an '86 Force 125 that does the same thing. Idles around 12v. But when going faster (4500) is goes up to 14-16 volts. When I use the trim/tilt, it drops down to 8-10 volts. But it always goes back to 12 when idleing. I have not had any adverse affects from this. As far as I know, its always done this.

I just thought I'd share my own experience.

Patrick

Re: Overcharging Force 125

The charging system does not have a regulator, voltage is normal.

Paul35 - I have a '93 Force 120 that does the exact same thing in the exact same situations. I thought my battery was going to explode, since the voltage was so high. I have run it like that ever since. Nothing has happened.....yet!

Re: Overcharging Force 125

Thank you for all the responses. It sounds like this is normal. I was concerned because I have owned the boat for 4 years and it has never done this before until this year. I keep waiting for my battery to expode. Thanks again guy's.

Re: Overcharging Force 125

Good stuff!! I was worried as my recent bayliner/force purchase had no working guages and I found all the resistors burnt out in them,I bought a new fuel guage and volt guage, checked the charge at home and found it ok,after a few solid days of use it climbed from 13v to 16v by the end of the week and I found myself switching the lights/bilge etc on to drain the battery a bit!which is a newish leisure type,I,m hoping its ok too as I don't want to buy more guages!!
