How does this work?
A little history; I went looking for a prop and ended up buying the whole motor for 60 bucks. A 1964 Johnson 40hp longshaft. (no controls) The seller even offered me an electric shift lower unit for 50, but I don't know anything about those types of units.
Anyway, all the wiring was cut clean at the motor. I can figure most of it out, but am wondering if that aformentioned lamp is a special bulb, or will any 12VDC bulb work? I know I once tried to replace a bulb on my snowthrower and was told it was going to cost me 40 bucks for a little bulb about 3/4" long. (thank God for moonlight)
I hope this isn't the same case.

If you are building your own harness you can use any 12 volt bulb. Run battery voltage to the bulb and the temp sensor will supply the ground. I used a small turn signal socket and bulb once to make a "hot" lamp.

Thank you. I was hoping I could get away with a hook up as you mentioned. Thanks again.

Would the same hold true for the electric choke, just feed it a positive thru a momentary switch?

Yes, battery voltage to one side of the switch, choke solenoid to the other side of the switch, push the switch and the choke solenoid should click.
