Re: Overheating problem Johnson 35HP 1982

Update... Well, I ran the engine with the garden hose connected directly to the inlet water tube and it ran cool with no thermostat installed. Let it run for over 15 minutes at fast idle. This is the first time it hasn't overheated, which leads me to believe that the problem has to be in the water pump. I'm installing a new impeller and what I need to know is if I can use either Permatex gasket cement or Permatex Ultra Black (silicone based) on the pump housing to get a good seal. Right now the housing has a groove with a neoprene seal in it. These shrink slightly and leave gaps. All suggestions welcome :) Thanks.

Use hardening Permatex SPARINGLY on the pump housing bottom and make sure it doesn't get inside the pump housing. I would replace the wear plate, unless you're sure the old one is not scored or warped. Also, Sierra had a hub bonding problem with some of their impellers. If there's any doubt, use an OMC impeller.
Should be fine when you reassemble ... make sure the water tube goes into the grommet, in fact you may want to apply some Permatex to the OD of the grommet to insure it stays in place while reassembling.

Well, I installed a new impeller and sealed the pump housing real good according to WildeOne's suggestions. Also G Dane said he had 3 deflectors in the cylinders in his motor whereas I had 2 in mine, so I installed the third one. We took it out on the river today and lo and behold, did not overheat. We ran about 8 miles at 4,000 rpm and it never missed a beat I could hold my hand on the cylinder head with no problem. I guess patience and perseverance pay off in the long run.
Thanks to all who gave me suggestions. :)
Ron
