Re: Owner does not have Title in Hands

Looks like people here are trying to give you good advice. When I first read your post I figured you would never see the title. If he was straight he would have told you he was selling it for another person when you questioned the paperwork. His FRIEND is probably doing time on the taxpayers expense and will not be available for a few years. If you do have him deliver it, he will be driving his friends car and accompinied by his friends wife. She will want to be there when the money changes hands. Boy, I am getting cynical in my old age. regards FRED

Re: Owner does not have Title in Hands

Ok, I was in the car business and have bought and sold plenty of boats. He (owner) can go to his state and get a couple of items. A notarized Lein statement (they can do a title search and check all leins) Remember even if he purchased it 30 years ago, if it had a lein then it will still show a lein. He will then need a release of lein form from the original lein holder. He can then go to the DMV and actually get a duplicte title form fill it out with your address as the mailing address. You will also need a certified BILL of SALE and a Power Of Attorney, this way when the title does show up, you have all legal rights to the Property. It does sound complicated but really and hour or so he can have all the documents he needs. Good luck.

I think if it was me I would tell him you'll take the boat. When he has the title in hand in his name drive the 200 miles and pick it up. There was a couple of time I was about to drive over 300 miles to get a boat, then found out they were scams. I decided to go new, it wasn't that much more, and you have a warranty.

Ok I looked at another boat this evening and I really like it. I may do a sea trial tomorrow.

Ok now back to the Kingman location boat. I think I offended the seller by all the questions about his honesty.

I will keep everyone posted.

Re: Owner does not have Title in Hands

I just looked at my CA registration form. Like CA auto docs, it has a space for lienholder data.

Re: Owner does not have Title in Hands

I gave the guy some dead lines.

Give me the contact info of the Previous boat owner. He knows this person.
Give me the contact info for the boat mechanic.
Give me a time and day I can view the Boat either tomorrow or Saturday.
Have enough documentation for the DMV and AZ G & F to transfer everything in my name.

I need this info by tomorrow noon.

He said He cannot possible meet all my request by noon tomorrow. He is to busy.

OK I guess he doesn't want to sell boat bad enough. Like everyone said its a buyers market.

Im done with this drama.

Im scheduling a Sea Trial tomorrow for another boat I viewed tonight.

Thank you.

Re: Owner does not have Title in Hands

Whichever boat you choose, Check HIN number to the title, most trailer VIN numbers are almost unreadable(they use stickers) dont be discouraged if you cant read it. Check for leinholder information, make sure if there is a leinholder listed that it is signed off and dated. Make sure if the title is allready by seller, that it is not dated. Most signed and dated titles have to be transfered within 15 days.

Check with your state what is required for titles wether it is the DMV or DNR, they may require a HIN inspection by a officer. They may also require all documents to be notarized. You may need a copy of sellers drivers license. Your state DMV should have a free download of required documents and probably a BILL OF SALE that can be printed. It is also a good idea to print out a power of attorney for boat and trailer and have the seller sign it.

It is horrible but once the seller has his/her cash they tend to vanish, save yourself the headache and make sure you have all required documents before the deal is finished and you tow it off. GOOD LUCK HAPPY BOATING,

These are good tips wether you are buying a boat, car, atv, anything that requires a title or registration. If you have ever purchased a car at a dealership look at the paperwork that you signed, all of this will be in there.

WHOA!!! Not so fast...this is not good advice. You need to be WELL aware of what you will deal with at our DMV in Arizona if you try and register a trailer with a unreadable VIN number. I don't care if you have a bill of Sale, title and registration. I had ALL of them and they didn't care.

You will have to go through the bond process in order to get your title. That means getting a NOTARIZED bill of sale from the seller, saying that he is releasing all interest in the trailer and he will not be going bond in Arizona. Then you will have to buy a new VIN number from AZ, then you have to go to an insurance company and buy a bond for the title, then go back to the DMV and wait in line for 3 days and pay your money for the title and tags. A HUGE PITA..trust me.

Re: Owner does not have Title in Hands

Now why in the ELL would trailer manufacturers put printed VIN stickers on a trailer that could be around 20, 30 40+ years  Printing that will wash out over time. I can't imagine it would be that terribly difficult to make a permanent metal VIN plate or stamp it into the frame...

My 2001 trailers VIN sticker was barley legible, bad enough that the DMV guy crawled under the trailer with a flashlight and studied it for a good long time to make sure it looked like it matched. Then he hauled out a huge magnetized automatic engraver and etched the VIN permanently into the frame.

Oh yeah, good luck with the boat search.

Let me get this straight... you think that YOU offended HIM? Con artists and less than ethical salespeople have a gift for shifting the moral burden off them and onto you. WHY ARE YOU EVEN STILL TALKING TO THIS GUY???

I seem to give people the benefit of the doubt. I'm done dealing with this guy and I have moved on.

Wish me luck in the sea trail and thanks everyone for the terrific advice.

Good for you. It sounds like you bent over backwards to be reasonable.

Good luck with your search, and keep us up to date. Some of us have to live vicariously, you know (my Admiral would kill me if I went boat shopping).

It's a nice quality to have. In the case of used cars and used boats, it'll turn you into a penniless, bitter man ;)

If it doesn't sound right or look right, just walk away from it. It isn't worth pursuing. There are plenty of other 'deals' out there.

If everything sounds fine, looks fine, runs fine... get a second opinion. Hire a mechanic and/or marine surveyor.

Best of luck in your search!

Re: Owner does not have Title in Hands

I once bought a small boat with no papers, from a dealer who sells a lot of stuff on consignment. I paid very little for it and wasn't too worried about it being stolen, because I didn't know about the consignment thing at the time. I just figured it was a boat that had been traded in, on something else.

Long story short, I went through all sorts of hassle, thinking that I could just register it as home made. I never could get that done and finally took it back to the dealer and fought for a bit, but got my money back.

Ever since this experience, I just don't waste my time fooling with boats, trailers, etc., that don't have the proper paperwork. It just isn't worth the hassle, or the possibility of unwittingly being in possession of stolen goods.

Re: Owner does not have Title in Hands

I feel bad for myself. This boat shopping thing has become an obsession. That is what my wife tells me. I joined this Site in Aug 2009 and saved up the money for a Boat. I have done lots of boat researching.

Now the time is here to buy a boat and finding a boat is driving me crazy.

I need help.

you are soooo psyched about finding a boat and making yourself happy!!!

NOT !!

ha ha ha

you know the term used to describe boats??

a hole in the water you pour money into!!!

few if any boats are investments.. and usually start losing value the moment you think about them !! ha ha

but I know you are excited, and we are all excited with you..

i hope you find a good deal and get a few summers of good memories out of it, before the expensive repairs and maintenace items come to get you!! ha ha ha

id say make sure you are solid on the notion that your motor is running in TOP condition... the boat will cause you few headaches, the trailer and the motor especially will be your achilles heel..

due dillegence on making sure the trailer is safe and sturdy and the motor is in good condition and not abused!!

good luck

Not sure how to interpret your response. Are you saying the seller is actually a thief, or that he's honest and doesn't like the insinuation that he is a thief?? Or maybe even that he is a thief and doesn't want to get busted?
