You don't always have to strip to bare metal if you're original paint is just faded you can scour, wash and tack dry then paint

Update...
Just spoke with 2 sea captains in my midst here at work. Big place....Didin't know about them.

They both independantly recommend the following: ZC primer then Interlux Primecoat then a good paint for topsides thats compatible with The Primecoat. Automotive paint would work but wicked pricey. Rustoleum should be just fine.

Re: Paint Opinions

I used Zink primer and Rustolium Primer and Rustolium top coat. Paint looks good and seems to wear well. Only been in fresw water since the rebuild but will test the Salt Chuck for summer Crabs in close to shore.

And here is the dent/crease when she flew off the trailer..Not a scratch of paint came off..Maybe because I painted her in Summer with 104 degree heat index? Instantly cured to the hull!

The reason I ask about auto body paint is I have a buddy with a body shop and access to all the white and several other colors (left overs) I want for free. If I end up needing additional or different colors, I get them at a reduced price. I may end up going with that gray and black stripe or white and blue stripe color scheme like on the late model Islanders. I even saw the decals are available on eBay. Would it work on the tops and bottoms? All I have to do is supply the labor for prep work and he will shoot it for free.

Hey SE. It sounds like any good quality enamel or lacquer paint will do in fresh water as long is applied properly. Yes, top and bottom. Water base might even work but I haven't looked into it. Salt water is a big ?

Good deal on the auto paint. I'd definately go for it if I had some. Maybe, just maybe if after every coat you close your eyes, click your boot heels 3 times and say "I wish she was that Islander" then down a beer it will transform into the sweet Islander in the pic.:D I'm having thoughts on that color scheme myself.:)

Re: Paint Opinions

Sorry for being away from this thread so long. I've been a bit busy lately, but not on the boat... :( I would like to thank Michael P, CBK, and Starcraft Enterprise, and anyone else who has helped here. I really like where this thread is headed, in terms of the process, tips, and first hand quality testing (CBK ;) ) Hopefully this will contine to grow.

I have also noticed that right now there is some paint prep, and talk going on now over in Jas's resto thread. I think I might bring some of that over here, and the link to the Rusto painted car.

Thanks guys... It's snowing now, spring is geting closer though.
