im in the process of restoring my 72 thunderbird and almost ready for paint. what is the difference between painting my boat with gelcoat or using a product like interlux or awlgrip? i know that gelcoat is way cheaper but what are the advantages and disadvantages of using either one?

Gelcoat is far superior in every way aside from one thing .. Maintenance. Paint you dont have to polish out every few years if your in the elements.

Other then that I think gel is the ONLY way to go for smaller boats. Its more durable .. Its less expensive to repair .. very forgiving. And more ..

Originality is also a plus for keeping the value up on classics ( gelcoat instead of paint ).

Arguably Gel is harder in the application ( yes it cures fast and can cure in your gun while in mid application ). I dont have a problem spraying it but I have been doing full spray gel jobs for Decades. Its a lost art kinda thing.

He is right about being a lost art. I never saw it done except laying up hulls. Everything is and was awlgrip including my own boat. If you google around you find there is a tip and roll method also. I had heard about it from a boat painter and then I saw it on Ship Shape TV. I looked really good when done.

I rolled and tipped, then rolled and rolled. I wouldn't recommend either. Too labor intensive (too much sanding) and the results where very dependent upon too many things.

I'd spray.

Ayuh,.... I've found, ya gotta LOVE sandin' to get Gelcoat Right, 'n keepin' it that way...

I've been shootin' boats of all flavors for 20 years with 2-pt urethane automotive paints,...
Pretty much the same stuff the fancy boat paints are, 'n danm near the same prices...
It Shines the second ya lay it down, 'n some of my jobs are still Shinin' years later...
Paint does Scratch easier than gelcoat, no denying that...

For a Money savin' paint job that looks Super,....
Roll, 'n tip on some Rustoleum, sweetened with abit of Majic hardener...
You'll be Stylin' for $30.bucks a gallon, 'n it'll Shine for many years...

Bond-o, can you expound on ..."Roll, 'n tip on some Rustoleum, sweetened with abit of Majic hardener..."

I would like to paint my aluminum boat this winter. Do I need to strip the boat down to bare aluminum? And what line of Rustoleum to use?

I'm also in the process of getting ready to paint soon. Over here I've been led to flowcoat which I'm told in gelcoat with the wax additive that makes it harden inc. The type we get over here is made to be brushed or rolled on , so i'm gonna use the roll and tip method and see how it goes. Obviously gonna try it out on scrap peice of ply first to be certain it works. We can also get pigments to add to white gelcoat so a range of colours are available at a little cost more.

Plan on flipping the hull next week and sanding and fairing then flocoating it in about a week hopefully. I can let you know how it goes if you like or else just keep an eye on my progress just check my signature...

Ayuh,... plain ole Rustoleum industrial enamel,... Majic is the brand name of the stuff I find at the local farm store,..
Some of the other guys here have found other suppliers of enamel hardener...

If the existin' paint secure, DON'T strip it off,...
Just ruff it up, 'n Prime it, sand it Smooth, 'n Paint it......

Depends on what gel you have to get ..

how do you spray gel coat? is it hard to make it shine?

I spray it with a pressure pot for full sprays ( already discussed which type of gun/setup I use in the forum

can i spray it over the boat(top, bottom interior)

Yes .. proper prep ( 80-120G )

We have jobs.. patience with replies :)

Very true for a DIY no exp job.. some can expect good results if the experience is already there .. if not you can turn your job into a brush/roll snot job and have more time and $$ if you just prepped it and had some pro shoot it.

Yes .. sanding gel to proper " buff ready " can be a pain .. but with paint you have to Prep/sand for primer .. then prep/sand for paint .. and then in some applications you have to sand between coats ( Hours and Hours of prep ) .. I would rather sand my coat down to a fine grit and buff it .. or paint and sand and sand and sand then apply .. sand ..apply .sand.. apply.then wait 2 weeks before the stuff kicks off enough for me to put it on a trailer....

I'm also in the process of getting ready to paint soon. Over here I've been led to flowcoat which I'm told in gelcoat with the wax additive that makes it harden inc. Wax does not Cure Gel .. its the MEKP at proper ratios .. Please dont try to roll and tip gel. It wont work. You need to spray for full applications.

More pics please. ...

you are so right! i dont want to spend all my time sanding, sanding, sanding just to get it painted to sand it down again. so i think gel coat is going to be the way to go. plus i noticed that gelcoat is really thick so it covers a lot.

how many coats?
after i shoot the gelcoat how long do i have to wait to wet sand?
what grit sandpaper?
what buffing compound do you recommend? can i use the same for automobiles?

how many coats?

It depends on the reduction you use for your gel and what color and brand of gel you have.

I normally do 25-30% reduction with acetone/Styrene ( 50/50 mix ) or ... 20% patch aid and add 10% acetone/MEK solvent for the mix for full spay pressure pot mix. I cat it at about 1.25 - 1.5 % MEKP.

For Full sprays even with the patch aid I like to spray on PVA over it. Just makes life easier. Water down the job and let dry .. then start with your dry sanding.

after i shoot the gelcoat how long do i have to wait to wet sand?

24 hours with proper cure should be fine to start Dry sanding with a D/A sander on the flats.

what grit sandpaper?

It all depends on how well you layed down the gel. Take care of any sags with a block and 220g first .. then you might start with 320 or 400. It really depends on how well the gel lays down and your spray. You might want to start with 320 ( for full sprays I start with 320 till orange peel is juuuust about gone..then 400 till the peel is 90-95% gone .. then 600 till GONE .. then 1000-1500 just to make the buffing .. um..not as HOT as normal. Wetsand with 600 and the 1200g..the 320-220 or even the 400g can be dry sanded.

what buffing compound do you recommend? can i use the same for automobiles?

I use 3m Imperial compound with a 3m wool bonnet ( the $40 per pop super buff double sided wool pad ).

I finish with the 3m Yellow double buff pad for glaze ( 3m foam pad polishing glaze. Yes you can use this on your car.. not the white pad ..).

You can use the HF Standard 2 QT pressure pot to apply ( not the HVLP systems they sell .. the STANDARD 2 Qt pressure pots with guns ) .

Good luck and ask me anytime.
