No problem Timdan. I'm with the guys on the Rustoleum paint, I just want to provide a second side to the argument. The one thing you'll want to make sure of though...buy the freshest paint you can if you can figure out how fresh it is ( don't buy dusty cans of paint, or clearance item paint ). Paint has a shelf life and it begins to go bad after sitting.

My shop though it was going to be smart and buy a pallet of polyurethane for cheap because it was being deeply discounted.

Yeah, it was 6 years old and was complete garbage...ended up costing us more in the long run than buying high quality poly. We've since switched over and have been exponentially more profitable (read: less problems/call backs ).

I guess that's the biggest part of my argument. Just because the paint is cheap doesn't mean it's good for your budget. Don't forget to use compatible paints/primers to avoid problems also!

My favorite paint for trailers--HAMMERITE-($15 qt, $55 gal lots of colors)---it is incredible. check into it---you may have to buy it online. I use their primer then put the paint on---you must follow the directions. Rustoleum is good but this stuff blows Rustoleum away. I painted my new trailer's springs and hardware in 2001. We use it in the saltwater intercoastal waterway at least once per month. No rust for 5 years and when i replaced the springs 3 months ago, i used the original u-bolts and nuts on the new springs. Hammerite is incredible.

I had to fix holes on both sides of the trailer this is just the one side. I did this on both sides. The welds need cleaned up yet then its time to start wire wheeling the whole trailer.

don't forget cold galvanizing paint - almost as good as galvanizing in some situations - hit the key rust spots. -
I have used it on a steel walkway hit with salt spray all the time - so far so good after 7 years

I have a 1979 Magnium which is the basic same style as your boat. When you mounted the seat in the front did you have any problems. Also what did you use to mount the base to the fiberglass. I want to put one in mine like that. Also is that trolling motor mounted. I noticed you had very little room on the bow to mount it. What kind and mounting bracket did you use. I am going to have to use or design a mounting area across the front of mine to have room. Just curious about this

All the guy before me did was take out the seat cushions then take a piece of 3/4" plywood cut it to fit the area over the seats. Then he mounted the base to that. All I do is pull out the seat cushions up front drop in the plywood then add seat then the battery and anchors and stuff to hold it down. The trolling motor is just bolted to the fiberglass with 4 1/4"-20 bolts with the biggest fender washers I could find to prevent them from ripping through. I am going to eventually redo the set up for the seat and fiberglass the platform and put some storage in it. But thats after the trailer gets done

Say, you'r ethe second person I've heard say good things about that HAMMERITE. They have a product called Hammerite Rustcap...that looks really good. I just can't seem to find anyplace that carries it. I also see that it does recommend their primer for going over galvanized or alum, so I would need to order it as well. Is it real expensive to have shipped? (like hazmat stuff?) Thanks!

I did my Shoreland'r last August. Left the boat on the trailer. Just pushed her back a few feet till the tongue got light.

Used Rustoleum's Hammer paint in silver. I brushed the tight spots but rolled on the rest of the frame. Looks pretty good. I need to touch up a couple spots I missed.

While I was at it I shot 3 cans of the ruberized undercoating on my axle and inside my fenders.

i use the paints from NAPA the 5001 primer and the metal clad i think it's called..... good as gold..... Spray or roll on it's semi self levlin.... but with the gun it's nice a smooth..... i will be re doing my trailer later this year... i will post lots of picks with all the stuff i run into .

Imron is a good paint. I have had very good luck with Dupont Nason paints. They are an implement paint, but you can have it mixed in any color you want. I have painted a few trailers, snowmobile A-arms, and a few other things with this paint. The nice thing about it is it glosses up nice, but not too glossy. The best part is that this paint stays a little softer so any stone marks, etc will not chip it. It just kind of marks it up and knicks it without flaking. If so desired you can add hardener to it also, but I never have.
As mentioned the key is a good prep job and make sure the surface is clean for the primer and paint to adhere, otherwise you get chipping.
I have used a few different automotive primers and they all work good. One primer I really like is the Napa self etching primer in the fizz can. That is really good primer.

my trailer needs some repairs and I'm going to paint it while the boat is off. What paint are you guys using when redoing them I'd prefer to use a sprayer and spray it. Thanks.

Depending on how much time you have. I'd get it cleaned up with a wire wheel / sand blaster. and then prime it. If you get it down to bare metal use a high quality primer like POR 15. It is expensive, but the trailer will never rust again, and the stuff is bullet proof. Then paint it.

Rust - O is okay, but in my experience you'll be painting it again in a few years if that is all you use.

I'm going to use the rustoleum rust converting primer, probably 2 coats then 2 or 3 coats of rustoleum enamel paint

I re-did my trailer in 2001 and painted it with ACE oil based enamel - their equivalent of Rustoleum... I have touched up some chips over the years but if it doesn't last well then 9 years is...?

Good prep and proper application will allow Rustoleum or equivalent to last quite well.

well now I'm also going to need new tires.... I bumped them with the wire wheel when I was doing the fenders... oh well might as well as replace everything at once
