Painting over Vinyl floor?

I am currently re doing the interior of a new old boat that i just bought. It still has the original old vinyl flooring on it from the 70's in it and as you can imagine it looks pretty rough.

I have the seats getting reupholstered now so I have to start making some decisions on what i want to do with the floor.
All the wood is in really good shape except for the odd drill hole from seats and chips out of it from over the years. My original plan was to make up some PB and cover any hole and chips and make them nice and smooth and then paint it.

Do you guys think it would be a better idea to try and scrape up all the old vinyl? or am i ok to just paint right over top? or even lay a new vinyl floor on top?

I plan on keeping this boat for a while and im spending quite a bit of money having all the seats get re done so i definitaly dont want it to look like shotty work. I recarpeted my other boat last year, but i think its time for something different so im hoping not to do it again.

Anyways, any tips are always appreciated.. also a recomendation for the type of paint i should get would be nice as well.

Thanks in advance!

Check out Hydro-Turf-Performance Traction Products. It's a little pricey; but you Get what you pay for.

Scrape the"vinyl" anywhere it's peeling, just like you Would do with anything you're going to repaint. Get rid of Any loose or peeling
material before putting down you're new surface (what ever you end up deciding to use.)

...And by the way, your "floor" is called a deck.:)

Please post some before, during, and after pics!:)

I'm very demanding, aren't I???

Good luck; and please keep us posted.

Ya know... You may very well be right. He might just be referring to da floor over da cuddy.

Maybe I'm hard headed; but I'm still just a dumb kid from Brooklyn...;)

I wouldn't put anything on top of 40 yr. old vinyl, I'd either remove the vinyl or trash the plywood with the vinyl stuck to it.... but that's probably just me. I'm the kind that figures if a job is worth doing, it's worth doing right... no matter how much effort it takes.

I definitely agree with jigngrub about scraping/sanding off all the vinyl prior to applying the new surface. If the wood is in really good shape, as stated, go ahead and refinish.

I'm probably going to cover my deck and swim platform with Hydro-Turf either this year or next.

Re: Painting over Vinyl floor?

thanks for the good advise guys. I guess im best off gettin to some scraping eh lol

I'm not worried about the amount of effort.. I just want it to look good. The vinyl is still stuck to the floor really well other than the odd scrape so i figured it might not make a difference.. or maybe i just didnt want to admit to myself that I have hours of scraping ahead of me lol

I just started looking into Hydro Turf. I think that might be th route i take for my deck but i still have a week or so to think it over so who knows.. and yeah, i said DECK this time :) lol

anyways, Ive been taking lots of pics as i go so as soon as i have her all back together I`ll post them up so you guys can let me know what ive done wrong :)

Thanks again!

Just a suggestion... Don't wait until you're done to post pics so we can tell you what you did wrong. Post pics before, during, and after. Better to be offered guidance during the process rather than solutions after...

Besides, I'm sure we all wanna see'em now, anyway.:)

A little bit of heat does wonders when removing old glue.

"Little" is the operative word. If you can't touch it with your hand; it's too hot.
Use an electric heat gun held back a foot, not a propane torch!

Re: Painting over Vinyl floor?

thanks uncle willie.. I'm heading out after work today to get a heat gun already.. figured that would be my best bet to get it up.

I actually do have the before pics already posted up in the restoration area. I asked about my flooring there but wasnt getting any hits so I re posted the question in this thread. I am a bit of a pic junkie when im working on stuff so there will be a lot added in the next couple of weeks to keep you guys updated.

I wont be posting too much more here because i dont want to have 2 threads on the go for it..

here is the link to my other thread..

Re: Painting over Vinyl floor?

Thanks bubba. I have never seen this stuff before. I think i might head out to my local shop and see if they have it there so i can try it out on a small section. I also really like that hydro turf that veritas told me about. Now i dont know what the heck i want to do lol I just know i dont want carpet this time around.. want to try something different.

I am going to have to go do some research and see if i can find more info on both and make a decision.

anyways thanks for the tips.. I always appreciate it!
