Background: http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=28;t=021495

I have a 1973 135hp Evinrude. I've been told by my mechanic that my cylinders are scored and have some bad reed valves. While I have reason to believe that he's just guesssing, I'm also thinking that it would be good to get some spare parts for if/when things do need help on my motor. Here are some things that came up on ebay and I'm wondering if this Johnson is compatible with my Evinrude:

Here's what's for Sale:

Parts from a 1973 135hp Johnson with Powershift II.

Model 135esl73m
sn j3878256

Here is the listing for the reed valves:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=50439&item=24762 40304&rd=1

Listing for the block: (looks to be in bad shape)
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2476240077

Here is the listing for another set of reeds that didn't sell. I'm in touch with the seller. Would this work on mine? I've asked for seriel number:http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/ebayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2476247520

Do you guys with experience have any idea if this stuff might be usable for me if my cylinders do end up being scored or reeds bad? Seems like the block would cost enough with shipping to make it a bit of an investment for not knowing the condition, but I'd like your input.

Ted

P.S. I hope to get my boat back from the hospital today or tomorrow :)

did he take the enigine apart to see these reed valves? i personally would stray from used reed valves how do you know if they are good or not untill you get them ? new ones are chep enough. just my opinion

how did your cylinder walls get scored. did you blow chunks or run out of oil?

curious

mike

Re: Parts from e-bay. Any thoughts?

Well Mike, it's like this. They told me that I had these problems, and then came back and said they actually hadn't had it apart, but were basing this on poor compression in two cylinders. I have to admit, I'm skepticle and will take a look myself once it get's back home. The boat is new to me and even though it has a real rough idle, it runs great. Now how could it run at all if several of the leaf valves were broken? How can they assume they know the problem if they haven't even opened it up? I'm going to decarb it real good and see if it runs better.

Thanks for the advice on buying new. I'll look into that if it gets to that point. Maybe I'm just jumping the gun at this point, since it could be that nothing is really wrong. I'm just going on assumptions from the mechanic. However, when I saw the e-bay listing for reeds for $5 I just thought, what do I have to loose? If it fits and costs me less then $10 maybe I should just get them as spares!

Anyway, that's the story! Thanks for the post.

Ted,
I think you might be jumping the gun just a bit. Until you can investigate the problems yourself, any opinions you get from that dealer are guesses at best. Find out what you have and then go for a solution. Do a compression test before and after the decarb and get a baseline reading. Post back on your findings.

I'm still learning the lingo so I'm afraid I'm not familiar with baseline reading. What is that? I'll definately do the comp. tests and decarb as suggested.

Lets just sit back, relax, take a deep breath and ponder the advice you have already got on your problem, The parts you are looking at you are probably never going to need.

Ted,
What I ment by 'baseline' is, get compression readings before you start troubleshooting. This is just a starting point to know what you have for compression figures before you start doing anything to the motor. After you do the decarb, take the readings again, then compare the results. The differences between the two sets of reading will tell you how effective the decarb process was.

Just a thought, Ted.

Parts swapping is the slowest, least reliable and most expensive means of troubleshooting you can do.

Like others, I am suspicious of your wrench's diagnosis. It doesn't fit your symptoms.

Find out what is really wrong with your engine, if anything. Make them show you what is wrong.

Then worry about replacement parts.

Good luck. :)

Ok. I'll sit on my hands while I count backwards from 1000, with calming soothing music playing in the background while imaging a beautiful sunset on the beach . . .

LOL. I'll just hold tight till I find out what's going on for sure. Thanks for helping me figure this out and keeping me calm

Ted

Amazing. We got 2 threads on the same subject and everybody is saying the same thing. Although it's refreshing to see someone so eager to spend money.

Ted, you must be single.

Well, I got the prop and it looks great! Unfortunately I haven't had the boat in the water since it the prop came. I'm looking forward to having it in the water this weekend and we'll see how it does. Thanks for asking.

LOL. No, I told my wife how much the mechanic wants to fix it (2K), so she's happy for me to spend whatever I want to fix it myself ;)

Can I work a new wakeboard in somewhere here under "parts"

Well, you set her up for 2K. Anything under that might just include new water toys. Better factor a bit of that for Mothers Day.

how much the mechanic wants to fix it (2K),
thats an awfull lot to repair a 1973 motor. you need a compression guage. do as the wise ones say! :)
i didnt have one untill about 3 months ago, it is quite frankly, the easiest, fastest, least foolish way to tell how good the inside of your engine is working. or how bad.

m ikey

Re: Parts from e-bay. Any thoughts?

Well, I'm in the middle of a decarb as per the "Decarbing FAQ" right now. I'm waiting on the second 15 minute's break before I run it again. I'll then borrow a compression guage and check if there is any difference. I guess I'll have to look into getting my own guage one of these times! I'm happy to have my boat back!

Also, it turns out the mechanic isn't that bad. I took my boat to a shop in town, and they in turn sent it to this guy. Well, I was talking to the shop people, and it appears they didn't really know what was happening, and so I got a lot of wrong info. When I actually talke to "the" mechanic he seemed to be pretty good! He only charged $50 which is his standard diagnosis fee, and he also went to quite a bit of work to have the carbs off he said. He told me that he didn't look at the cylinders but one had low compression. Also said one of the reeds was probably bad because there was air coming out of the carbs. I don't know about all that, but I'll take it one step at a time from here. He advised I run her into the depths, and then buy a new boat :( I'm not ready to do that, so I'll keep you posted on how it goes! Thanks.
