So the wife was at the dentist today, and the dentist was commenting on driveing into CA and the produce check stop on the I-5, as well as the fire wood check stop coming into CA from Arizona/nevada (not to sure, really which).
Is this a thing you guys have to go through when going from state to state????

( I realize you live in a republic, does that make each state a country all on to its own???)

Thanks
Rob

Re: Passing on to the guys my wifes question

The only place I have seen it other then California highways is I-10 on the New Mexico Border but it has not been used in a decade or so that I remember, they are not used on any highway in Colorado. I have been stopped at the Illegal alien stop on I-25 in New Mexico around Truth or consequences several times. The Border stations were initially placed to prevent the spread of insects and disease that could destroy crops between states but they have kind of become a state security check in recent years. I still enjoy asking the state border guards if the insects honor the state borders without interstate crossings.....

Each State has the right to enact laws for the residents within the state which can be tougher then federal law but are not supposed to be more lenient then federal law, for instance Marijuana is Illegal by Federal law however several states have made small amounts of Marijuana legal. The state can also impose its own taxes/tax rates. There are a few things that the Federal Government has done recently that the States are challenging to the US Supreme Court and that's how we find out if the Federal Government is over stepping its authority as prescribed by our Constitution.

Hope this helps

There are also inspection stations coming into California from the north. As in most places, they ask that you use firewood that is indiginous to the area. They also ask that non-native fruit be inspected. Many people don't realize the quantity or variety of produce grown in California.

There has been produce check points going into California as long as I can remember, when I was growing up, we lived in WA and my Grandparents lived in CA, so every time we went for Vacation, we were stopped after leaving the OR border on I-5, for an ag/produce check and that was in the late 60's

I'm pretty sure CA is the largest farming state and produces more food than any other state, so CA is fairly protective of crops. Many of the inspection stations are to keep bugs in or out. There are areas that we're not allowed to transport fruit out of because it's an infected area. There are times when birds aren't allowed to be transported due to the bird flu. We've had a ton of birds die because of infections. We have a bark beetle in my area that's killed tens of thousands of trees and makes forest fires worse because of the fuel load, so many states don't want firewood from this area.

We have Homeland Security Check Points and the log trucks are routinely stopped and checked by the various police agencies (State and Local, fish and Game and even a special DMV Task force). Firewood/Logs in general are not allowed to be imported due to a dangerous insect and another item is wild game. Chronic Wasting Disease is focused upon.

What is interesting is the amount of log trucks going to Canada. There is a significant market for wood in Canada.

When flying into the Grand Bahamas any fruit or flowers go into the trash.

I can understand Californias concern. Here in Massachusetts the state recently cut thousands of acres of trees in one city trying to prevent the spread of a beetle introduced from a foriegn country that destroys maple trees.

MTBG-Yes even I remember those check stops on the I-5 from when I was a kid and we drove down to dizzzy land in 1974, I think???

Bob, I wonder if the wood being shipped up here is all hard wood foor making floors ETC, I know that right now we (BC) are having a heck of a time selling dimensionally cut softwood, fir, spruce, pine due to the slip in your housing market.

I just had to buy some lumber the other day, all they are carrying is lumber from Canada, if they would lower the price at the retail level some, perhaps the market wouldn't be so slow, I could not believe how much they wanted for a stud!

RBH you understand our nation better than most of our residents:D

That was the original intent, but the federal gov't has a will of its own.

I hope we will always be able to cross state lines without check points, and I miss the days when we could drive into Windsor with no passport too.

Moving back to Mn from Ca after getting out of the NAVY. Was stopped at the AZ boarder,, they asked if we were driving thru or stopping in the state. We gave the correct answer of driving thru, otherwise they were going to confiscate the several houseplants we had in the car for destruction [insect concerns]

I think last night (on the market report) the cost was $334.xx per 1000 running feet????
Those numbers have come up some, I believe they tanked out about $260.00 a couple of years back, but before that they were in the high $380-90 possibly low $400.

Even now our big mill in town will not open till the prices go up or they have a better customer base (asia)
One of the issues that picks my butt is that we are selling raw logs, we need to pass a law were they have to do the dimensional cutting here.

You have 52 states, (right) we have ten provinces and two territories (at least thats what they used to be called)

Here the provinces that make huge coin (OIL/natural gas/MFG, divert a portion into a "slush fund" that is diverted into other provinces/areas that are not doing so well
(at one time Ontario and Quebec were the ecomomic hubs of Canada due to all the MFG that they did, now not so much)
now it has moved into the resources catagory. so now places like BC Alberta, Sask, Manitoba, Newfoundland are making good coin when the commodities prices are high.
So were am I going with this, no idea:facepalm: But if every provinces is working towards a common goal (yes even Quebec, at times) alot more can be accomplished than working alone.

Here in wisconsin it even goes as far as different countys. I live in brown county and there has been a problem with the emerald ash borer, so if i go up to my cottage which is in oconto county about 90 minute drive i cannot bring fire wood. i can bring firewood from cottage to home tho.

FSHPKR, the emerald ash borer has already jumped the river into Iowa. Not sure what direction it's been progressing in Wisky, but I imagine it will find it's way to Oconto eventually

rbh-imagine a major metro area that straddles a state line. Just a street, oddly enough called State Line Road, separates the two halves. No bridges to cross, just pavement. State tax laws can and do effect the buying habits of the area residents.

We have that issue as well, BC has a 12% sales tax (fed and provincial) our neighbour Alberta has a 5% sales tax (fed only).
Lots of people will drive there or order by phone and have it shipped, 7% is still 7%.
