Re: Passing on to the guys my wifes question

You have 52 states, (right) we have ten provinces and two territories (at least thats what they used to be called)

Here the provinces that make huge coin (OIL/natural gas/MFG, divert a portion into a "slush fund" that is diverted into other provinces/areas that are not doing so well
(at one time Ontario and Quebec were the ecomomic hubs of Canada due to all the MFG that they did, now not so much)
now it has moved into the resources catagory. so now places like BC Alberta, Sask, Manitoba, Newfoundland are making good coin when the commodities prices are high.
So were am I going with this, no idea:facepalm: But if every provinces is working towards a common goal (yes even Quebec, at times) alot more can be accomplished than working alone.
The last time that i looked at our US flag it only had 50 stars;);), one for each state.
Now we have several US territories, which you may be confusing as states:facepalm:.

Sometimes they'll check your hay if you're going into a national park with horses to look for invasive grass species, but otherwise no.

Now that you mention it, I've seen those signs about hay in Eastern Oregon at the entrance to National Forests. From what I've heard, Scotch Broom is a big problem. It's non-native, invasive, fast growing, and poisonous to grazing stock.

Both Montana and Idaho have laws in place that they can stop you and check your hay for invasive plants also, invasive weeds are a big problem.

One of the check stops we had here 20 years ago checked for eurasion milfoil, one of those plants that started in fish tanks but got loose into the lakes here.

We also have our boats/kayaks checked for the zebra & quaga mussels (not sure if it's spelled correctly). When we went to Yellowstone, we were inspected in Utah, Idaho, and at the park. Some inspection places even had high pressure wash systems set up so you can wash your boat right there.

Sad thing is that I thought about it but couldn't come up with a suitable zinger. One I thought of was, "52 if you count Ontario and Quebec."

Entering Florida there are signs telling you to pull into the check station if you have plants. Plus all incoming trucks and trailers (including rentals) are required to stop. Usually just a question about what you are hauling, any plants, etc. I don't know what they do if you have plants. They asked to look inside a rental trailer once when I was moving one of the kids. Saw a bunch of household goods and sent me on my way. Wasn't there 2 minutes.

Re: Passing on to the guys my wifes question

I think last night (on the market report) the cost was $334.xx per 1000 running feet????
Those numbers have come up some, I believe they tanked out about $260.00 a couple of years back, but before that they were in the high $380-90 possibly low $400.

Even now our big mill in town will not open till the prices go up or they have a better customer base (asia)
One of the issues that picks my butt is that we are selling raw logs, we need to pass a law were they have to do the dimensional cutting here.

FYI, the reason raw logs are being exported specifically to Asia is all of North American mills are designed to get the most possible rectangles out of a round raw material (log) It is a strucural product product and no one cares what it looks like as it will be covered, so long as it is structurally sound.
In other cultures (specifically Asia) the appearance of the grain of the wood is vitally important, and they like to take apart the log with the grain of the wood in mind. You can do it one way or the other, but you can't do both, and our computerized mills aren't capable of doing what many Asians prefer.
