If I run mine wide open or cruise it'll get pretty hot. And that's with a new water pump. At idle, warm. I have a 1998 Merc 25.

It should be a little warm...how warm is dependent on how well the engine is running, ambient temperature of the air and water and how well your cooling system is working. As long as its not getting hot to the touch, you should be fine.
