penta 280 problem shifting between forward and revers

5.7 lt engine 280 leg

We have just bought this boat, so we are not sure on what is normal or not. The leg lift a bit in reverse and then bumps down hard when put back in forward is this normal.

No, it's not normal. Sounds like the reverse lock has problems. Either it's worn out, dirty, or corroded.
